Although some people think of New Jersey as a state with nothing but Seaside Heights and overpopulation, it actually has a lot to offer, despite its bad reputation. Growing up in the state all my life, I’ve learned that Jersey is a place with a wide variety of places to adventure to. Jersey is home to mountains, beaches, cities, farms and good food – there’s not much more to even ask for.
No matter where you are in New Jersey, you’re always a quick drive to New York City, Philadelphia, amazing beach towns, incredible hiking destinations and so many other places. In my (almost) 20 years of living in one of the most diverse states in the country, I’ve found some pretty cool destinations, and here are five of the greatest ones.
1. Liberty State Park
Liberty State Park is a cool place to go to on a warm, sunny day. The park is located in Jersey City, so it has an amazing view of New York City. My favorite thing to do here is bring a blanket and some yummy food to have a picnic while looking at the skyline. This historical destination has a lot to offer, including ferries to both Ellis Island and Liberty Island.
2. Mount Tammany
Located in Knowltown Township, Mount Tammany is an awesome place to go to for a hike – but it’s definitely not an easy one. I did this hike last summer with some friends, and it took us a few hours to get up the mountain – but the view was incredible. One of the great parts about this trail is that it’s very easily accessible from Interstate 80, plus it has an awesome view of the Delaware Water Gap. If you’re into hiking, this one is definitely worth it.
3. Eagle Rock Reservation
Located in West Orange, this destination also has a great view of New York City – specifically Manhattan. What’s really special about Eagle Rock is that is has a 9/11 memorial. The reservation is nice to go to on a sunny day to look at the skyline and appreciate the significant memorial.
4. Sandy Hook
If you’re driving to the beach on the southbound side of the Parkway, Sandy Hook is the very first shore point. Technically in Middletown Township, this land spit is an awesome destination because it combines the city and the beach. Along the coast of Sandy Hook you get a stunning view of New York City (I think I might be a little bit bias toward New York). The location is great for the view, the beach or to just explore.
5. Jenkinson’s Boardwalk
This list of New Jersey destinations wouldn’t be complete without a boardwalk. The Jenkinson’s boardwalk, located in Point Pleasant Beach, is my personal favorite because it has that fun, boardwalk vibe without being too over the top. On the north end of the boardwalk, there’s a great view of the Manasquan Inlet along the jetty. When you walk further south, you’ll find awesome attractions from fun boardwalk games to tasty pizza places and ice cream shops.
