Are you ever bored in class or have absolutely nothing to do and find yourself staring at your phone? Of course you do. After every social media page has been refreshed about twenty times we start to realize there’s nothing else to do on our phones. During that empty time period though, you could be making a difference in thousands of animals' lives by simply having some apps on your phone. Here are six easy to use apps to help you make a difference in animal’s lives
1. ResQWalk
This is my very favorite app to use when helping animals. It motivates you to get on your feet and work out or make a difference. ResQwalk works by tracking how far you walked. You first start by registering your profile which can include registering your own pets under your profile (an extra chance to brag about how they’re the cutest). From there you choose a shelter of your choice. These shelters range from one’s in your local area and projects such as the beagle freedom project. Then every time you walk you press the start button and when you get to your destination or finish a jog you press stop. It tracks your distance and even marks on a map where you walked or ran. The shelter you chose in the beginning receives money by how much you walked. How do they get this money? It’s donated from a larger company to ResQwalk which means you don’t have to use your own money. The distance traveled overall for each shelter is calculated and money is donated at the end of the week from the large pool of money.
My favorite aspects of this app is how it helps you strive to achieve personal goals along with donations. You can set how many miles you want to walk a week and every once in a while after completing your goal they will send you free stuff from the company.
This app is incredibly easy to use and makes a huge difference for shelters. I usually turn it on when I walk to class and I can watch the miles increase as the weeks go on just from little walks around my campus. It’s also a fun way to keep active and even compete with friends.
2. PETA & PETA2
These apps are very helpful to all animals around the world. After downloading the app you have “tasks” you can complete. These tasks include current event issues animals could be facing anywhere. All you have to do is register your email and click on a task and you can either call or it will automatically send an email. It’s completely safe to use and will even show on the app which ones have had victories.
So what’s the difference between Peta and Peta 2?
PETA is more for adults and just ranks up points. PETA 2 is more interactive and ranks up points that can be used to buy books, clothing and other accessories from their store for free. They also have more creative tasks that you can be a part of like drawing pictures or taking Snapchats. Both are super fun and easy to use and can kill time in between classes.
3. Veg Restaurant Guide
This one is great for vegetarians and vegans who are trying to find somewhere to eat. Even if you’re looking for a new restaurant to try this is one of the best apps (even for non-vegans or vegetarians). This app uses your location to find vegan and vegetarian restaurants near you. What I really like about this app is it has reviews, pictures of the menu and even pictures of the food. For picky eaters it’s really helpful in making sure there’s something for you to eat there.
4. Bunny Free
I absolutely love makeup! But what about makeup that’s been tested on animals? Not so much. Animal testing is a disgusting method used by some companies today to test skin reactions and many more things. This app can search through your cleaning supplies and cosmetics to make sure every product is cruelty free. It works by looking through a list of companies that test and don’t test or to make it quicker you can just scan the barcode quickly. It’s easy to use at the store like in Sephora or Ulta to make sure the product you are buying doesn’t test on animals. You can also search makeup companies and can find a link to a new one and do some online shopping. You can also find vegan products if you’re looking for ones without milk or eggs in it.
5. Vegan Nom Nom
Even though I’m still working on being fully vegan I know it’s a very important aspect on helping animals since you’re not contributing to animal agriculture companies. Veganism is also a very healthy diet and has shown huge results in weight loss. With that said this is a great app for anyone who wants to learn more about vegan food and is looking for more vegan recipes.
