Have you ever wondered why 4/20? Why that day, why those numbers, or why it`s considered "weed day".
April 20th has became to be known as weed day. People nationally know this term and smoke pot on this day as if it was a holiday. But why April 20th and how did this come to be?
Well I did some researching and according to Time and Huffington Post, apparently it dates back to the 70s when a group of students fromm San Rafael High School called the "Waldos" coined the term. They even have proof in an old flag, with numerous of letters using the term, and 70`s post marks. So I guess that means they`re responsible for the day right?
It started when the group heard that a coast guard service member could no longer tend to his plot of marajuana plants. The group would then were on a treasure hunt to try to get some free bud. They would meet after practice at the statue of Louis Pasteur at 4:20.
So at 4:20 they would go out on the search for the plot and smoke on the way there and on the way back. They had done that week after week, which really might of just became an excuse just to go out and smoke. They never found the patch but going to smoke and look for it at 4:20 became their thing.
Then it became a term since they were still in school. Neither their parents or teachers would know what they were talking about so they could talk about smoking out in the open with no one but each other knowing.
This was just the start though. The Waldos had a good connection with the band,Greatful Dead. The band had just moved blocks from the Waldos high school. The Waldos also had open access to Dead parties and rehersals through one of their dads who was a hip. They said they used the term around the band of course.
Before they knew it the band was using 420 in their flyers and songs and then the rest is history. So really the national stoner day, where all around the world people spark up and light up because it happens to be a certain date and time. Really was just a group of students who went out smoking looking for free bud.
So to all who celebrate 4:20 you can thank the Waldos.
