Original

Freshman year was a year of ups and downs and a lot of learning on how to expect the unexpected. Let's just say there was more surviving than thriving.

College is definitely not what you think it is going to be and freshman year proves a lot of things when it comes to expectations. Food is more expensive than you think, and you learn quickly how little sleep you can run off of. There are good things that came out of it too, but freshman year definitely taught me that there are just some things high school does not prepare you for.

1. Sleep will no longer be considered a necessity.

2. There is no such thing as too much studying.

3. Study rooms and the library are your friend.

4. You will not go to every frat party, and I promise you would not want to.

5. If you are in a sorority, you are really really involved with your sorority.

6. Football games are longer than you think.

7. Oh yes, your GPA can be that low.

8. You can never own too many T-shirts.

9. A bank account can go into the negative numbers.

10. Food will also no longer become a necessity.

11. That walk was farther than you thought it was.

12. Twenty minutes is not a lot of time in between classes.

13. Freshman fifteen is a real thing.

14. You will come to appreciate party city.

15. Food tastes better at 4 a.m.

16. Every night is a night people will go out.

17. Tutoring is a life changer.

18. Campus parking is hard to come by.

19. You can go an entire week without seeing your best friend.

20. Uber can get expensive quickly.

21. McDonalds is redefined as an acceptable food source.

22. A planner can make your life 10x better.

23. Being on time is not as easy as it once was.

24. Studying the night before is asking to fail.

25. Groupme is your life now, accept it.

26. Losing your ID is worse than it sounds.

27. Take every free item you are offered.

28. Coffee may taste bad but failing feels worse.

29. Rain jackets are not as helpful as you think.

30. You will ruin any white shoes you own.

31. Heels on Northgate is not the best idea.

32. Time goes by way faster than in high school.

33. There are few options for food after 1 a.m.

34. Sleeping in is a very rare occasion.

35. There are more events than you have the clothes for.

36. You can stay away from the people you do not want to see.

37. Puppies are serious therapy.

38. Textbooks are optional even if they are required.

39. Not everyone is in a sorority or a fraternity.

40. Freedom is everything you wanted it to be.

41. College rocks.

Freshman year may have not have gone how you planned it, but it will be some of the best memories you have from college. Thanks and Gig Em'

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
