College is a stressful time for everyone, and sometimes, the stress can seem overwhelming. With class time, study time, time with friends, family time, and personal time, there is just not enough time in the day to even squeeze in a workout or a good night of sleep. This stress is obvious, but it is also your life right now, and there is basically no way to escape it other than to take a deep breath and realize that life goes on and everything works out.
1. You will be okay
That midterm will not determine the rest of your life and that research paper won't kill you. Have some coffee, tea, candy, or whatever gets you going, sit down, and focus on what needs to be done. Push through it and put on your grown-up pants–this is college. The world isn't going to end.
2. Whatever you're stressing over won't matter in 10 years
When my friends and I were in middle school, we used to joke and say "Will this really matter when you're 30?" when one of us was being dramatic about some middle school crap. In retrospect, we were right. In 10 years, the guy who was an asshole, that test you failed, and that time you got too drunk will all just be memories you look back on with your college friends and laugh at. What will matter in 10 years is the steady life you have, with the awesome job, husband, kids, and whatever else you see in your future. You'll probably miss your college days, so it's really not worth stressing about them now.
3. Take time for yourself
Take a night to stay in and watch a movie, Facetime your friend from home, eat a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's with some 'za, cry, scream, get upset, and let everything you're feeling out. You can't keep all of your feelings bottled up, and you'll feel much better after taking some time to yourself.
4. If you aren't happy, do something
I really do believe that we are in charge of our own happiness. You might have to actually try and put substantial effort into changing something that is bringing you down, but you can do it. Don't be afraid to try things and put yourself out there for the sake of your own happiness. We only have four years in college, and we should be making the most of it, no matter how stressful it can be.
