Fictional characters, both on television and in books, are an important source of inspiration, comfort, and exciting drama. A few weeks back, my favorite character in the history of television, Lexa, was killed off of The 100 (a much longer story I will not get into). And I may or may not have cried on the floor of my bathroom. For those of you who watch "Grey’s Anatomy," or any show by Shondra Rhimes, you also understand the pain of having your favorite character ripped from your arms. Here are the stages of disbelief that you may experience:
1. Denial
This can’t be real?!! You repeat to yourself, over and over, clutching the pillow to your chest. This isn’t really happening??
2. Anger
ARE YOU KIDDING ME????????? !!!???? At this point, you may throw something at the tv. Or, your housemates may come rushing in to check on you to see if you are okay, which in fact, you are not.
3. Sorrow
You need your Kleenex for this stage. Maybe two boxes. At this point, you also may apologize to your roommate for your ugly crying and blowing your nose every two seconds.
4. Exhaustion
You’re all cried out and exhausted from the emotional roller-coaster that was the mess of the episode. You decide to try not to think about it, and go to bed.
When the writers kill off your favorite character, it’s okay to be upset. Sometimes, we see parts of ourselves in the lives of those we watch on tv. There isn’t a thing wrong with that. Take a deep breath and put things in perspective- or, write an article about it.
