College. These past four weeks have been some of the most confusing, mind-blowing and truly eye opening.
Coming to Omaha, Nebraska from the heart of St. Paul, Minnesota has been a huge transition. From the moment my mom and dad left me here, I knew my journey had only just begun. So much freedom, barely any rules and a clean slate, what doesn't sound good about that?
Those were my exact thoughts my first week and then I called my mom in tears and told her I was ready to come home. Let's just say she wasn't too interested in driving twenty-four hours in a matter of three days. Since being here I have learned more about myself and the person I want to become than ever before.
So here are my four lessons learned in four weeks.
1. Laugh at everything even if it's not funny.
Laugh when it's 2 am and your uber driver tells you a joke, just laugh, it'll be less awkward. When your 8 am philosophy professor gets jazzed from arguing over Socrates, laugh with him because of his passion. Laugh through your first anatomy test and afterward, go laugh with your friends who thought it was impossible. If you don't laugh, people will take you too serious, so you should always laugh.
2. The more you call home, the more you'll miss it.
Yes, I love getting the snaps and phone calls from my mom of how my room is being used my siblings, that's great. When you're feeling homesick, as hard as it is, don't call your mom. All she will tell you is how much she misses you, which doesn't help at all. Call your little cousins or your aunt, it's still a reminder of home, but they're bound to make you laugh or smile.
3. Justin Bieber is NOT too cool for school.
You are bound to make at least five new friends if you blast "One Time" or "What Do You Mean?". Dance your butt off because chances are if you do so will others, and if they don't they're missing out. Sing it and sing it loud and proud. Make a fool of yourself because hey why not? And don't forget to love yourself.
4. Go out.
Go to the soccer games, even if you'd rather watch a caterpillar start a cocoon, it may be super boring but go. Find a local coffee shop, walk there in the morning and take in the city. Leave campus, you are entitled to have a life outside of school. Get out of your 12x12 box, you have all year to live in it. Go and enjoy the next four years of your life because it's all going to happen way too fast.
Though I've only been here four weeks, I have learned so much more than I ever thought I would. I can't wait to take on this next adventure as the entire world awaits me.
