Since the time I began studying French in college until now, I have discovered a multitude of French music. Whether you are looking for sad love songs or danceable party tunes, you will most certainly find some sort of likable French music. Furthermore, it is even better if you want to learn French to listen to their music. It can teach you common phrases and help solidify conjugations and vocabulary words. It can also help you get used to the speed of French language speakers. So, here are some songs, as a French language learner and a music minor, that I recommend:
1. “J'ai jeté mon coeur” by Françoise Hardy.
This song is slow enough for beginner French learners. It is a melancholy love song with catchy guitar accompaniment.
2. “Papaoutai” by Stromae.
This song sounds very upbeat, and is great for dancing, as demonstrated by the music video. However, it describes serious issues revolving around an absent father. This song is good for advanced French speakers as there are rap parts, but everyone can sing the choruses.
3. “Sympathique” by Pink Martini.
Pink Martini uses a lot of great intermediate-level vocabulary words in this piece so that you will be able to sing “Sympathique” and understand it. It is a sad song, with a catchy melody that incorporates amazing piano playing.
4. “À la faveur de l'automne” by Tété.
Another easy piece for French language learners, “À la faveur de l'automne” is a sad song with a sad melody. Tété has a beautiful, smooth voice that has a lot of comforting capabilities.
