Last year, the world witnessed a heinous tragedy when Germanwings flight 9525 was crashed into the French Alps. The Drexel University family lost two of its own when graduate Emily Selke and her mother, Yvonne Selke very sadly passed in the crash. A year later though, two friends are organizing an event in their honor, celebrating their lives.

Julie Kimelman and Alyssa Stump, friends of the victims, as presented by the Emily & Yvonne Selke Memorial Fund will be putting on the 3rd Planet Music Festival in honor of Emily and her mother Yvonne. The event is named after Emily's favorite song "Third Planet," and the specificity of having a music festival in her honor comes from Emily's dream to start her very own live music festival.

The proceeds of the event will be directly going to the Emily & Yvonne Selke Memorial Fund, a foundation that helps Drexel students with passions for travel and live music and helping others, specifically in helping those students who want to study and work abroad. Emily was incredibly passionate about travel, having spent time abroad both in Edinburgh, Scotland and Barcelona, Spain.

Julie, the founder of 3rd Planet Fest and close friend to Emily and Yvonne says, "Emily had this way of finding the positive in absolutely every situation. She was one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met. No matter what time of day or night, she was the type of friend who would always answer the phone and know exactly what to say." The festival will surely be able to truly honor Emily's life, friendships, and allow her passions to live on.

Bands to be featured are: OxyMorrons, Bombadil, Kodiak, Family Volleyball, Wild Orphan, Twin Coves, Argonautic, Skinny Dip, 18th & Addison, OhBree, Uncle/Father Oscar, and Alyssa Joseph.

3rd Planet Fest will take place March 19, 2016 at 2:00 pm at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, PA. The hope and goal of this event is for it to become an annual event, as to keep Emily and Yvonne's memories honored joyfully through music.

Tickets are $20 and can be bought at 3rdplanetfest.com and general donations can be made at gofund.me/emilyandyvonne.

This is truly a special event, and Julie and Alyssa have created something that is admirable and is sure to be incredible as they further Emily and Yvonne's memories through their passions.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
