When asked about what life in a sorority is like, a common phrase that many women use is, "from the outside looking in you can't understand it, and from the inside looking out you can't explain it." This is even more true when describing what life is like when you're living in a sorority house. Although many people think the idea of living with 80 or more women under one roof sounds pretty scary, for me it has been the experience of a lifetime. With all of your sisters just steps away, you're bound to learn a lot.
1. You learn that privacy is nonexistent when you live with over 80 girls and share a room with at least a few of them...
2. But you don't care because you'd rather be hanging out with your sisters anyway.
3. You memorize the menu for the week as soon as your house mom puts it up and celebrate with your sisters when you see your favorite dessert on it.
4. You don't bother shopping anymore because you have a whole pledge class of closets to borrow from...
5. And you realize that you probably won't be leaving with the same wardrobe that you came to school with after all of the swapping around.
6. Brushing your teeth and listening to the radio on full blast every morning becomes bonding time for you and all of your fellow sisters that have to brave an 8 a.m.
7. You realize that secrets aren't secrets when you're constantly surrounded by girls...
8. But you don't really care because you were bound to end up telling most of your sisters anyway.
9. You learn that you will always have someone to go out with, watch movies all night with, and most importantly, go to Sonic happy hour with.
10. You realize that there's no need to have your own music playing on the weekends when your house is completely surrounded by fraternities.
11. You learn that you never have to walk across campus by yourself because you'll have at least one other sister in your class.
12. You always have someone to help you with boy problems, whether it be figuring out what to reply to his texts or cheering you on as you walk out the door for a first date.
13. Your house mom and chef will become two of your favorite adults at college.
14. You learn to plan your outfit out early for socials because every girl in your house will be raiding the closest thrift store in the area before you know it.
15. You figure out that the study room in your house is just another room for you and your best friends to distract each other in.
16. You adjust to the fact that it's okay to still be sleeping in a bunk bed even if you're in your 20s.
17. And that taking all of your mattresses off of your bunk beds and having a sleepover on your floor is also still appropriate to do in your 20s (if you haven't done this yet -- please do it and you'll thank me later).
18. You learn that girl talk will be a nightly thing that occurs with your roommates.
19. You realize that anytime you have chapter or an event, there is a great migration from your house to wherever you're going on campus.
20. You start to refer to certain rooms by their nickname and not their actual room number.
21. You see that anytime a boy walks into the house everyone will know within a matter of minutes...
22. And at some point of the year you'll have a crush on one of the kitchen boys.
23. You find out that the assigned spots in the house's parking lot are not to be taken lightly...
24. But that's okay, because your sisters are always down to carpool anyway.
26. You realize that merchandise pass-outs are like Christmas Day in a house full of sorority girls...
27. And that you find nothing weird anymore about matching with an entire house of girls when you're wearing your new merch the next day.
28. You learn that FOMO is all the more real when you're used to constantly being surrounded by your friends...
29. And you begin to hate breaks because it means you have to be away from them way longer than you're used too (a.k.a. when you're in class).
30. You sometimes will forget that you go to University of ________ because you are surrounded by your sorority 24/7.
31. But that's OK, because your sorority sisters have made your college experience what it is so far.
And after just a few months of living in house, you'll learn that you started the year with 80 other women as roommates, but will leave at the end of the year as best friends, study buddies, wing women, and each other's biggest supporters, which will leave you with a sisterhood that lasts a lifetime.
