Anyone who knows me knows that I'm incredibly proud of all of the roles I've held in the government. I know I'm only 22, but my experience far outweighs my age. I'm proud of all that I've accomplished, and I'd like to shed some light on what it's like to work for the federal government.
1. You will feel like you're part of something bigger than yourself.
When you work for the government, whether it's for the Department of Homeland Security or the Department of Agriculture, you become part of something bigger. You become part of something that contributes to a bigger picture. Whether you're protecting the traveling public or helping regulate commerce, you're contributing to the bigger picture. It's an amazing feeling, and if you're a 'do-gooder' like myself, I would highly recommend it.
2. The hours are terrible, but the rewards are worth it.
Sometimes you get stuck working absolutely horrendous hours like any other job, but the reward you feel after an eleven hour day is something you won't find many other places. Whether you've been inside of an aircraft all day, sitting behind an X-ray machine or helping write legislation, a long day's work is a good day's work.
3. Being away from home isn't fun, but seeing the world makes it worth it.
As a federal employee, you're bound to get to travel. Most federal agencies require some form of education provided by another federal agency before you can start. I will never forget the time I've spent traveling for work. It's been fun, and I can't wait to do more.
