3 Things Concerts Have Taught Me

Getting the most out of a concert experience.

If I could afford it, I would go to every concert I possibly could and see all of my favorite artists. I think it is money well spent and the overall experience is totally worth it.

Over the past couple of years, I have been lucky enough to see artists live that have had a huge impact on my life. Artists such as John Mayer, Lake Street Dive, Matt Corby and Bon Iver moved me to tears and I would watch these performances over and over if I could.

The most important thing I have realized from these concerts is that I always walk away feeling full and inspired, and it creates an experience I could never forget.

1. The importance of expanding and discovering new music

I love discovering and learning about new artists. The best thing about these discoveries is creating more opportunities for concerts to open up. Sometimes it is hard to expand or escape my comfort zone when it comes to music, but doing so can reveal so much about music that I never knew I could connect to.

2. Live in the moment

As cliché as it sounds, the most important thing I have learned from live shows is taking advantage of the moment I am in. When I really take a second to realize the situation, I learn to appreciate it so much more. I try to actually look around and think about all the people who are in the same place to love and celebrate the same amazing feeling.

It is this one huge crowd escaping the chaos of their lives for just a few hours in order to gain this overwhelming happiness and peace. It is always the same feeling at every concert I go to and I wish could experience it more.

3. Appreciate the people you are with

Concerts always seem to leave a very distinct memory in my head. I can always easily identify the feeling when I hear the songs again and all the images come rushing back. The people who I experience this with play a huge part in those memories.

The great thing about being at a concert is that all of your attention has to be centered at one thing in a single moment. You and the people you are with are sharing that moment and feeling together. It is something that has created stronger bonds with the people I love and has formed special and loving relationships. It is SO awesome that music can do that.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
