If you’re a future college graduate, you know the struggle that comes along with finding a job, your resume. Putting your resume together is not only a taxing task, but can make you realize just how little you may have to show for. Here are 3 ways to boost your resume without even realizing it.
1. Make sure it is clean and concise. This basically means do the obvious, if you look at your resume and it isn’t eye catching, then you need to fix it up a bit! Look for things like white space, blank space, ragged sentences, irregularities. All of these things can hurt your resume, and you may not even realize it. Keeping things constant throughout the resume will help the reader. Most people say the first 20 second scan can truly make or break your chances for the job. It like when you open a book, the smaller the print, the more likely you are to put it back and look for something more suitable to the eye.
2. The next step to adding to your resume it to find experience, even if you don’t think you have experience, look into things and places you didn’t think about the first time around. For example: Let’s say I work at a company like Starbucks, from there, you could say you are experienced in customer service, keeping the store up to par, answering phone calls, taking orders on a POS system, etc. That looks a lot better than just adding Starbucks under job history. The more you elaborate upon your endeavors, the better your history will look.
3. The next task at hand is to get your resume looked over. Having it looked over by a professional, or even a teacher if you still have University resources, can help you tremendously. Even though there are thousands of videos and resources online, sometimes if you’re the only one looking at the resume, you can miss some things. It best to have a fresh, experienced set of eyes on your work. Who knows, they may even be able to help you add more things based on you major or profession that could help get the job! Example: As an engineer, listing a GPA above 3.3 shows you were competitive in your schooling and took your course work seriously.
Making the final touches to a resume can be tense and rewarding at the same time. Knowing you have done everything correctly can help reassure that worry in the back of your mind. Take the time and perfect your work, it can lead to your future.
