Guidance for Living and Understanding in Our World

Learning can take place in any place and at any moment. Similar to heat which can be transferred in a variety of ways (conduction, induction, convection, etc.) learning can also be transferred in a variety of ways, and similar to machines which can be manipulated in a variety of ways (to push, to pull, to move up and down, etc.) learning can also be manipulated in a variety of ways.

Learning is the force responsible for the adjustments and amendments that have resulted in our bodies adapting to the surroundings for centuries. Learning never ends and it is never content with simply finding a single defining phrase for every word--a single solution for every problem.

For example, look at the words world, living, and understanding. Individually, they are dependent on each other because they work together to describe a common reality for all the species that we interact with and are a part of. That common reality can be described as the world in which we are living and understanding, living and understanding in the world, or even understanding the world and living.

Trying to understand how words are connected to each other is a good way to actively practice learning. Changing the location of a word in a sentence may mean changing its meaning. In addition, the meaning of a word can change based on the location of the person who is viewing the word.

Every individual including you and me, has a slice of the life pie. Mine TASTES differently than yours!

Every creature including fish and frogs, has a piece of the life puzzle. Mine FITS in a different spot than yours!

Every subatomic particle, including quarks and leptons, has a place in the very composition of life. WOW, mine is in a different location than yours!

Learning about the very essence of individuals', creatures', and subatomic particles' place in the world, may help us understand what living could be. Learning about the different locations that people are in while reading or absorbing meanings from sentences, can help us to learn about how we can eat a different slice of pie, use a different piece of the puzzle, and try out a new spot in the composition of life.

These three people that you should get to know--listed below--have spent their lives contemplating, questioning, and sharing their observations about learning.

"Sadhguru" Jaggi Vasudev

"This life for me is an endeavor to help people experience and express their divinity. May you know the bliss of the Divine."

Sadhguru is a living embodiment of mindfulness and wisdom. His teaching focuses on the idea of Inner Engineering--starting inside to affect the outside. Looking inwardly to ensure the well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. He is a Yogi and a Mystic who takes ancient teachings and makes them applicable and understandable to both Eastern and Western Cultures.

He is the founder of the Isha Foundation which makes a difference in the environment and communities in the rural areas of India by planting trees, providing computer training, and providing medical care.

Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov

"What I want to do is to explain to you, as simply as possible, the great truths on which human beings can base their existence."

Contemplating and Synthesizing are two of the main activities that Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov engaged in. With an honest humor and a simple tongue, Omraam demystifies that which seems mystifying-without affecting or altering the mystery itself. He takes common truths and makes them more accessible to everyone in a concise and alluring way. Omraam merely takes a stick of butter and melts into a batch of cookie batter with the hope that those who hear his learning aids will begin the process of changing or cleaning their glasses to see in a new way.

Thích Nhất Hạnh

"Don’t worry if you feel you can only do one tiny good thing in one small corner of the cosmos. Just be a Buddha body in that one place."

Thích Nhất Hạnh embodies a life of mindfulness and compassion. He has dedicated his life to helping everyone else find those same qualities within themselves. He believes that the process for finding those qualities and then recognizing and embracing them can lead to a more peaceful life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
