I grew up with my mom listening to country music and my dad favoring the genres of classic rock and heavy metal. I strayed from their path when I was older and began listening to a wide range of music. I discovered Debussy, One Direction, Asking Alexandria and more. I'm by no means an expert on music, but the three bands I've included are quite possibly my absolute favorite and they may come to be yours, too.
1. Alter Bridge
I discovered Alter Bridge through my father who says that, “Myles Kennedy is one of the best vocalists out there right now, if not the best.” Well, dad, you’re absolutely right. Alter Bridge formed in 2004 but they’ve always remained kind of low key, until recent years. The members include Myles Kennedy, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips. Their newest album is due out in September 2016.
Genre: Hard rock, heavy metal
Check out: Rise Today, Shed My Skin, Cry of Achilles, Blackbird, Watch Over You and Slip to the Void.
*Side note: You may already know who Myles Kennedy is if you’ve been following Slash for the past few years with his newest project, “Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators.” Also, Mark Tremonti is the lead singer and guitarist for the American heavy metal band, Tremonti.
2. Halestorm
My dad, again, takes credit for introducing me to this female-fronted, GRAMMY Award winning band whose members include brother and sister duo Arejay Hale and Lzzy Hale as well as Joe Hottinger and Josh Smith.
Genre: Heavy metal, hard rock
Check out: I Am The Fire, What Sober Couldn’t Say, Innocence, Scream, and their cover of Pat Benetar’s song Hell Is For Children.
3. Sir Sly
While the past two bands are categorized under the hard rock and heavy metal genres, Sir Sly is a complete 180. They opened for The 1975 on their 2014 North America tour, which is where I first saw them and fell in love with their music. The band consists of Landon Jacobs, Jason Suwito and Hayden Coplen.
Genre: Alternative rock, indie pop
Check out: Expectations, Found You Out, Where I’m Going, and their cover of Drake’s song Marvin’s Room.
