As and adult there is pressure from every side telling us "to get our life together". Everyone wants us to be mature and reliable human beings.
We're expected to pay our bills, go to the doctor's, buy groceries, buy gifts for birthdays, make time for family, make time to exercise, complete community service, complete tax forms, buy a car, change the oil on that car, change our mind, and change into clean clothes. Not to mention, maintain a steady job, maintain healthy friendships, save money, save the day, be on time, be yourself, be like your sister, be successful, be humble, love others, and love vegetables! If we're being honest it is all just TOO much! Well, I'm here to say, I feel you.
I know where you're at, the excitement, the stress, the joy, and the true terror of being an ADULT. Let's take a few moments to cherish the many places we find ourselves, the thoughts that cross our minds, and the panic that strikes our hearts every day. Welcome to adulthood.
1. Making your own doctor's appointment
Skills, skills, skills!
2. Missing that appointment.
Crap, crap, crap. Sorry mom.
3. Doing a self-diagnosis of your symptoms on WebMD
3. Being 5 minutes late to literally every shift
No matter how many alarms you set, or how early you get ready, you can't seem to leave the house until your shift is about to start. At least you're consistent.
4. Attempting to be a more positive person
5. Smiling at a stranger and having them take it the wrong way
Go you for being friendly without being told, but now the old guy wants a hug...YIKES.
6. Being social at the store
You ask the cashier how he’s doing, resulting in a solid conversation, which then leads to a lifelong hook up of cookie dough ice cream! Score!
7. Buying your first car!
A.K.A. fighting for your sanity after being hassled for 7 hours by the sales guy and ending the day by signing your twenty-two years of savings away.
8. Getting your oil changed, all by yourself
Who cares if it was a year after you bought the car, at least its getting done!
9. You amaze yourself with just how far you can go on an empty tank
Waiting to fill up until the low fuel gauge is waaay in the red. "Turn off the a/c, roll down the windows, go slow, coast down the hill, conserve the gas!"
10. Cleaning your room
You even round up the clothes you haven’t worn since middle school and take it to your local charity!
11. Getting your car washed
12. Laundry gets washed
You find all your missing clothes and suddenly nothing fits in your closet...you also don't believe in hanging up clothes which is why the clothes you just washed were probably clean to begin with.
13. You accidentally wash your license...
Which results in a happy trip to the MVD, complete with cheerful customer service and fantastically long lines!
14. Signing your first solo cell phone contract
BOOYAH. You now get to pay an arm and a leg to check Insta and Facebook 50 times a day, oh and get texts from your mom 24/7 reminding you to brush your teeth and eat your vegetables.
15. Cracking the screen on your brand new phone…
16. Going apartment hunting and asking all the hard questions
“So just how late can I access the pool & how large is the bath tub anyway?”
17. Going up on a Tuesday because you work weekends and every other day...
Dance, dance, dance.
18. A sophisticated day trip turns nightmare
Getting in the car realizing you lost your keys and wallet. Who needs to drive home, or pay for stuff anyway?
19. No one has time to hang out anymore
Meaning you have parties for 1 and have to find interesting ways to keep yourself entertained. PARKOUR!
20. Dates are horrific
And of course, it's never you...
21. Your heart gets shattered
We put ourselves out there, take a chance, and sometimes our hearts get CRUSHED.
22. Which leads to discovering your self-worth
You are worth it and you are enough people!
23. Family gatherings are a nightmare
You beg your sister not to bring up that you are newly single, that you failed a few courses, that you won't actually be graduating this semester, and the fact that you are 10 lbs. heavier since you saw her last. Of course, your sister never listens.
24. Cutting ties with friends
Realizing that everyone has different priorities. You love them, but you're not going that way. That's OK.
25. We're all in this together.
We aren't perfect beings and maybe we won't ever "have it all together", but that's alright. Thankfully we can turn to God for consistency, comfort and to be our true source of strength and stability. Do the best with what you've been given. Happy Adulting!
