College can be one of the best years of your life.

You discover more about yourself than you could ever think you would. Being someone who has never changed their major, I've also been stopped in my tracks by the discoveries I have made as a music education major.

With that being said, you know you're a music major when:

1. The etudes your professor gives you are the songs that are stuck in your head.

2. Your home away from home is the lounge with all your music major friends.

3. You find yourself being able to harmonize on cue with said friends.

4. You get asked all about the instrument you play.

5. A buddy brings an instrument to the lounge and you instantly want to learn all about it.

6. Or you teach your instrument to a buddy that asks you all about it.

7. You cram for music tests together the night before.

8. You plan your schedule around the people in your major's schedule because you have a guaranteed study buddy and friend in gen eds.

9. All of your time is spent doing stuff related to your major.

10. You're taking 10 classes a semester.

11. Half of your classes are either 0 or 1 credit hour.

12. You play piano duets in the practice rooms with your music major pals.

13. When you learn something new, you want to test your teacher skills with your friends.

14. Half your exams are verbal or tactile.

15. You constantly carry a pencil with you.

16. A good chunk of your textbook money is spent on song/etude books.

17. You plan a night to watch Broadway musicals with your department.

18. Everyone is down for some Karaoke!

19. You find yourself walking to the beat of the music that's playing downstairs.

20. Your professors are cool enough to come sit in the lounge and chat with you.

21. You say you'll practice every day over the summer... but don't. (E for effort on this one guys).

22. You get together with your friends to compare lesson plans.

23. Sounds around town become ear training interval tests. (The Charlotte light rail ding is a perfect fourth if you were wondering).

24. Everyone except you thinks you're talented.

25. You see that the only friends you have are in your music classes or related to music somehow. Then you chronically miss them over the summer.

Boom. Those are 25 of the many signs that you are a music, music education, or music by association (you know, the education majors that come sing in the choir with us) major.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
