24 Things To Thank My Twin For

A letter to my other half, literally.

24 Things To Thank My Twin For

Hey Tash,

I know it can get pretty annoying--this whole twin thing. All the "oohs" and "aahs," and curious stares from strangers who peer at us like we're a zoo exhibit. I mean, is it really that unbelievable that two people look alike? And maybe laugh the same? And sometimes only need a facial expression or hand gesture to communicate an entire story? It's funny because while we look similar, and while we share some of the same qualities, we really do have our own identities (as it should be). You, my dear, are most certainly different from me. You are a hell of a lot more organized. You are rational. You like flannels.

Do you get on my nerves a lot? Sure! But no one else can say that they have a sibling exactly their age (even though I'm technically 3 minutes older) who knows them better than anyone else. Well, besides other sets of twins of course. It's special--as simple as that. There have been so many obstacles in my life that I couldn't have overcome without your guidance and love, whether it be broken bones, a broken heart, or countless broken laptops.

So, thank you for:

1. Letting me use your ID to get food on campus when I’m out of money

2. Sticking up for me when I don’t (or even do) have the courage to do so

3. Sharing the same obsession with our pets

4. Having pointless conversations with me

5. Sending me random inspirational quotes throughout the day

6. Letting me complain (and complain, and complain some more) about my life to you

7. Knowing when I need a hug

8. Being active with me

9. Putting up with my rap music when I’m driving (partially because I let you play country when it’s your turn to drive)

10. Letting me borrow your clothes (you’re welcome too)

11. Apologizing 20 seconds after we have an argument

12. Being a great hair-braider

13. Never forgetting our secret handshake we made up in middle school

14. Signing in our names at the dentist office for all those years when I was scared to talk to adults

15. Forgiving me when I accidentally dropped a sand art glass on your head and you had to get stitches

16. Being weird with me

17. (Almost) Always telling me when I have food in my teeth

18. Being brutally honest

19. Helping me make decisions when I’m indecisive as hell (sorry)

20. Coming to college with me

21. Being my #1 fan

22. Eating midnight snacks with me while watching "Chopped"

23. Always reminding me to recycle

24. Being my best friend

So, I just wanted to remind you that you're kind of awesome. As our lives continue to pick up speed, I'll always have my compass pointed toward home--wherever you are.

Love,

Sam (a.k.a your older sister/only twin)

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
