23 Short Term College Goals

A new semester means a fresh start. New classes, new people to meet, possibly new housing. Here are some short term goals to keep in mind to help you succeed to your full potential.


1. Less Netflix

2. Spend more time in the library

3. Go to sleep around the same time each night during the week

4. Wake up around the same time each week

5. Meet at least one person in each of your classes

6. Less late night eating

7. Set times to specifically relax, such as cleaning or drawing

8. Keep your room clean

9. Do laundry the same time each week

10. Call your parents

11. Write down what your homework is

12. Plan a monthly calendar for academics showing when each quiz and test are

13. Reach out to people you talked to last semester that you don't see this semester as much

14. Make a playlist for music to listen to when you're studying ahead of time

15. If you take medications, take them at the same time each day

16. Drink TONS of water

17. Read books for fun, they can be interesting

18. Keep extra supplies for when you run out (toiletries, school supplies)

19. Talk to your professors one on one

20. Do not skip classes unless you are actually sick

21. Try new foods at the dining hall or around campus

22. Set a schedule for the gym and stick to it

23. Set one meal aside each day to cook

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
