Time after time again, we see people who aren't used to the idea of Greek Life making false assumptions on our organizations as a whole. They pay for their friends. They just sit around and party all the time. The list goes on and on. What they don't know, is that Greek Life makes up a large percentage of some of the most successful people in the United States. Though we're not going to say it's a direct correlation that being involved in Greek Life leads to a happier or more wealthy ending for you, we aren't doing to deny it either. In order to defy all of these quite sad remarks made on Greek Life, I sought out the advice of dozens of members from the Greek community all across the nation...
1. All we do in college is party.
With all the work that we're doing between classes, chapter meetings, our other obligations with outside Greek Life, work, and more, we might even have less time to party compared to the average college student.
2. Being in a fraternity or sorority just hurts your grades in the long run.
Greek Life is home to some of the most dedicated individuals you will meet in your life, from chemical engineers who study 24/7 to psychology majors, stuck in a lab until 2am.
3. I don't feel like getting hazed.
This is a huge stereotype. Not every chapter hazes. Every chapter, in the Panhellenic Council for example, is expected to follow the same anti-hazing standard as the next.
4. I don't want to pay for my friends.
If I paid for my friends, I'd owe a lot more in dues than I do now.
5. I'm not that into drinking.
Newsflash! You don't have to drink within sororities and fraternities, just like you don't have to drink in college, just like you don't have to drink at all. Period.
6. Not many chapters participate in community service.
Some of the largest donations towards philanthropic non-profit organizations come from members of Greek Life or from a Greek chapter across the United States. Take all the hard work and dedication that goes into philanthropic events like FTK, for example!
7. Greek Life seems like way too much work.
Greek Life is what you make of it--you can do minimal work and commit to the bare minimum that the chapter requires, or you can be someone who does everything, is on exec, and commits to every volunteer opportunity the chapter offers!
8. Women who are in sororities aren't friendly.
Lies. Just plain lies.
9. A lot of chapters just want certain types of people.
Again, a huge misconception. My chapter, along with hundreds of others, value diversity and the differences between each sister. It's what makes us so special as an organization.
10. A lot of people in Greek Life must flunk out of school because they don't have enough time on their hands.
This is just called time management. We're pretty good at it to some extent.
11. Girls in sororities only go through recruitment because they want more attention.
Well this is just false.
12. People in Greek Life don't really participate in other organizations on campus.
From Student Government Organization to Women In Business to Marching Band to Campus Reps, we've got some serious commitment to our campus, our chapters, and our other organizations across our universities.
13. Greek Life in reality is the exact same thing you see in the movies.
Nope! A lot of movies over-saturate the thought that Greek Life "welcomes" parties. We welcome opportunities for other chapters to get to know other members of the Greek community, but not to exactly go out and party all the time.
14. The key to dating a boy in a fraternity is to be in a sorority.
Wrong. Go on Tinder and prove yourself wrong.
15. People in Greek Life have really simple and easy majors to get a degree in.
From being a double major and minor, to having friends that are part of Nursing, Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science, we challenge you on that misconception.
16. Greek Life is way too small of a community to be a part of.
Though it seems like a small community at first, being in Greek Life is really a big family. For example, at UMass Amherst, it's about 12% of the current undergraduate student body, yet is made up of more than 2,500 people! We're pretty much the size of a small college.
17. Greek Life is super exclusive.
Anybody who goes through recruitment has a chance at being placed in a sorority. Greek Life is not about turning away members of your community, it's about celebrating their individual personalities and becoming something bigger than yourself.
18. People in Greek Life don't worry about paying their dues or any other housing expenses because they come from money.
Shadow me during my three jobs this summer and then come back to me again and tell me that I have my money handed to me.
19. Each chapter is exactly the same.
No chapter is the same. That's what makes all of us amazingly diverse and interesting to learn more about.
20. Being a member of Greek Life makes you have to keep up with appearances and always have the newest of everything.
Just because you're in Greek Life, doesn't mean that you're filthy rich and can afford the latest technology, clothes, or dues right away. This is a horrible misconception that unfortunately, we hear a lot.
21. Tiers exist and people always pay attention to them when going through recruitment.
Websites like Greekrank contain thoughts on Greek Life that are inaccurate to how the actual chapter exists. Anybody in Greek Life knows to ignore these sites wholeheartedly.
22. Listing your Greek status is really bad to put on job applications.
On the flip side, many people have landed amazing jobs or internships based on their alumni connections and commonality with Greek Life. Trust me, it helps.
23. You have to look a certain way in order to go through recruitment or get a bid to a specific fraternity/sorority.
You should never go into recruitment thinking that you need to have a particular hair color, be a specific weight, or be involved in a specific number of things in order to impress members of that chapter.
