22 Things I Experienced While Living In Freshman Dorms

Freshman year is a time for trial and error, making new friends, and learning how to survive in the dorms.

22 Things I Experienced While Living In Freshman Dorms

1. I learned quickly that no matter how hard you try, that scotch tape won’t stick to white, cinder block walls.

2. Spending a whopping two and a half hours trying to catch a mouse that wound up in my friend’s dorm room (and never succeeding).

3. Finding enough hair in the shower to make a wig, on a daily basis.

4. Waking up on April Fool’s day to learn that someone covered all of the toilets in the guys' bathroom with toothpaste and glitter.

5. Seeing all of the Snapchat stories of toilets covered in toothpaste and glitter.

6. The night I walked into the lounge to wash my pot full of Ramen, only to find two people fornicating on one of the study tables. Needless to say, it was an awkward experience for us all, and my dishes didn’t get done until the morning.

7.Finding free cookies, pizza, or candy in the lounge on any given day.

8. Living on a floor where it was deemed acceptable and understandable to take the elevator instead of the stairs.

9. Knowing that there would always be someone in the lounge. Even at three in the morning on a Tuesday.

10. Feeling pressured to buy donuts or pizza from yet another school club when walking into the building.

11. That time our RA found a shoe in our lounge’s already-preheating oven.

12. Being woken up from my second nap of the day by someone running down the halls.

13. The time our RA led a field trip to see Fifty Shades of Grey on Valentine’s Day.

14. Waking up to a fire alarm multiple times in one week because someone forgot how to make microwave popcorn.

15. Knowing that there would always be someone up to go grab food with you.

16. Scrolling through numerous passive-aggressive posts on the floor Facebook page reminding everyone that all of the washers were done.

17. Countless times of sneaking into the laundry room to take my stuff out of the washers without anyone realizing it was me.

18. Ordering delivery at two a.m. after already surrendering to the Freshman Fifteen.

19. Realizing how depleted my bank account was after buying said delivery.

20. Finding myself having to trek downstairs because I had once again locked myself out of the room in the middle of the day.

21. Catching the freshman plague. And then catching it all over again two weeks later.

22. The impossible task of having to fit everything back into suitcases and boxes at the end of the year.

Here's to you, Anderson Four North.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
