21 Things I Told Myself I Will Do While I'm 21

Besides legally purchasing strawberry vodka...

Turning 21 is a big deal. (Duh.)

Being 21 means you can legally buy alcohol, check-in to a hotel on your own, and are one year closer to being able to rent a car! But, I want this year to be so much more than just doing things "I'm finally allowed to do." I want this year to be -- as cliché as it sounds -- the best year yet.

So, without further ado, here's a list of everything I want to check off my bucket list in the next 365 days:

1. Walk across the stage.

Aka graduate. How many months away is May, again?

2. Get into grad school and/or accept a full-time teaching position.

Either way, this means lots of time on applications.

3. Go on a trip with just my sisters.

Key word being 'just'. No parents. Isn't this a big milestone in growing up?

4. Stop worrying about what others think.

It doesn't do me any good, anyway, and certainly doesn't change anything.

5. Talk to my parents every day.

Even if it's just a simple "Sleep well, love you!" text at 11:00 PM.

6. Budget my money (and STICK TO IT).

Having to financially support myself means I won't be able to randomly buy pizza sweaters on Amazon anymore... How sad.

7. Publish ANYTHING.

Flash fiction, a poem, an academic essay... I'd be happy with whatever!

8. Stop criticizing myself.

Seriously.

9. Swim regularly.

Because I love it and it's easy on my grandma back.

10. Actually schedule all my appointments by myself.

No matter how scary talking on the phone may be.

11. Read the Bible every day.

Just five-minutes can lower my stress-levels. (I've done it before, so why not keep at it?)

12. Start DIY-ing for my classroom.

Gonna have the #CoolestClassroomEver. Just sayin'.

13. Diet and exercise to be healthy, NOT to lose weight.

Because a number on a scale doesn't equal healthy.

14. Care less about my social media popularity.

Repeat after me: My worth isn't determined by my Instagram likes.

15. Be an advocate for those with no voice.

And remain passionate about it.

16. Stop stretching myself too thin.

I need to accept that I can't do everything.

17. Kiss in the rain.

Or dance in it. I'm flexible.

18. Learn Spanish.

Rosetta Stone, here I come!

19. Limit technology use before bed.

(This excludes sending and receiving goodnight texts to and from bae.)

20. Scrapbook.

I'll have zero free time, but I'll make it work.

21. Have a f***ing blast.

Because I'm finally Twenty-Fun!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
