21 Pieces Of Advice That Could Change Your Life
Inspired Classroom Blog

I hear these pieces of advice on a weekly basis, from many different sources and in many different ways. From close family members to college professors during lecture halls, it seems everyone seems to offer up their words of wisdom. Subtlety or not, they may not know they are even doing it. Subconsciously, looking out for one another is a strong suit to have, and although advice is usually greatly appreciated in most cases. Many, including myself, don’t always take it. Pushing it aside, they focus on the moment and day-to-day hurdles. Busy schedules and life’s challenges often get in the way, and we sometimes forget what is truly important.

Although thinking long term can be unpredictable and seem like a waste of time, it can pay off in a number of ways. These simple pieces of life advice, could really change your life if you actually let them.

1. Explore new places.

Whether it is a new country, or simply a new city -- going out and traveling is the best advice one can give. Being young and having the whole world out there at your finger tips is simply such an amazing feeling. You can learn so much from a different area, and immersing yourself in the great things it has to offer.

2. Take lots of pictures.

Document your life! Don’t go overboard, but it will be nice to look back on your accomplishments, one day. Whether it was high school graduation or summer sleepovers with your best friends, being able to look back at all the memories will make you realize how far you’ve come.

3. Spend time with your family.

Put the extra effort in to visit relatives far and wide. Even if you can’t see them all the time, even just calling or texting them can make a world of difference. You’re little bit of effort could make their whole week.

4. Volunteer.

Doing something for others without wanting or expecting anything in return can not only help the community, but also yourself. Realizing how much of a difference one person can make can be life changing for many.

5. Put down the phone.

I know in this digital age this can be hard to do. Our whole lives are in the palm of our hands and this concept is so addicting, but just imagine the people you are spending time with. Be present. Our time is precious and we shouldn’t waste it staring at a screen. You never know what you might see when you look up.

6. Learn something new.

Between cooking classes and courses on comparing television shows to real life, they have a class for just about everything. Take one that interests or challenges you. Learn a new recipe or a new set of directions. Ask questions, receive answers, and appreciate what you are learning. Obtaining new skills or knowledge can be valuable and you may thank yourself later.

7. Pick up a creative hobby.

Photography, writing, painting, organizing, scrapbooking, you name it. New passions are out there, and creative outlets help us be who we are.

8. Don’t stress so much!

That midterm you were so worried about is already done and passed. Your bill being late was able to be fixed. That fight you were in has been resolved. Your life plan has a way of working itself out. Things that may be stressful now, will be nothing even worth thinking about years from now.

9. Practice healthy habits.

Pick up a healthy snack, go to the gym, meditate, run, do some yoga, exercise, breathe. Your body and mind will thank you for any amount of effort towards this.

10. Don’t wait.

Anything you want to do, make a plan to do it. Be determined. That trip you want to take? Plan it! Want to make deans list? Study up! Want to get that new job or internship? You got this! The world is yours -- go out and get it.

11. Focus on you.

Those days where you just want to lay in bed and watch Netflix are perfectly fine. Don’t feel guilty for the once and a while splurge of a shopping spree or pampering. Making time for yourself is healthy and perfectly normal.

12. Set up for success.

Whatever your future is your actions now account for it. Put yourself on the right path. Everyone needs to start somewhere whether it is big or small.

13. Don't let money become everything.

Monetary values matter less in the big scheme of things. Don’t take that extra shift if you have to forfeit plans with someone you care about. In the end, that time will be worth more than any dollar amount.

14. Gain different perspectives.

Don’t just shut down everyone’s advice. Listen for once and think of where they are coming from. Look at all your options when deciding things. It is a great thing to be able to see a situation from all angles.

15. Enjoy yourself.

Go to those parties you were invited too. Spend your night out laughing and enjoying everyone’s company. Stay up late. Take that midnight drive to the middle of nowhere. Have that movie marathon. Go to amusement parks and play pranks -- you’ll regret it if you don’t.

16. Make new connections.

Reach out to the others around you. Don’t be afraid to make new friends and network yourself.

17. Keep the old.

Don’t lose yourself or your friends. Stay connected to them. Send that group chat message and post that #ThrowbackThursday. Make time for them and they will for you.

18. Do something you've never done before.

From skydiving to skiing, there has to be something that you’ve always wanted to do and haven’t done yet. Don’t hold back.

19. Remove the toxins.

Don’t let anything cause you harm. Whether it’s a bad habit or a bad relationship, work it out or kick it to the curb.

20. Jump at opportunities.

Opportunities shouldn’t be taken for granted. Free resources or building blocks to leapfrog to success are usually worked hard for so grab these when they come to you.

21. Live it up.

Be you! Take advantage of moments worth celebrating. Be proud of your accomplishments. Look back at where you’ve come from. You’ve done so much and you deserve to enjoy it. Be full of love, life, and passion.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
