Being 21 is a milestone that everyone looks forward to. Although at 18 you are legally an adult it really isn't until 21 that you get all of the full adult privileges. So 21 is definitely a big deal!
Now, technically 21 is when we are legally allowed to buy and consume alcohol. Being a college student I can tell you for a fact that not everyone follows that rule. Regardless, there is a huge stigma surrounding the idea of being a 21 year old that doesn't drink. Why is it such an abnormality that someone can be of legal drinking age, but not want to drink?
I am newly 21 but I have never really enjoyed drinking. It was never something I sought out to do and it was not something I felt I needed to do just because I am a college student. Most of my friends are of legal drinking age do drink alcohol and that is their choice; it was just not something I was into. When I first went to a college party I was amazed at how many people were drinking. What was even more shocking was that I was the only person not drinking alcohol. I told my friends that I didn't want to drink and they gave me a confused look but eventually let me be. Over time people knew that I wasn't a drinker and they stopped asking me. Even though it is a little odd considering all of the stereotypes surrounding college life, drinking alcohol isn't crucial to a good college experience. People will respect you just the same whether you drink or not. I have had a few people be slightly forceful in trying to get me to drink, but my friends knew my situation and they had my back. Most of the time, people are really accepting of your personal choices and just want to ensure you have a good time. I still have plenty of fun and enjoy parties, and have all of my memories of the party intact the next day. One night in particular, I was talking to someone at a party and they asked me if I wanted a drink. I told them no and explained that I don't drink alcohol. That same person then told me that they were surprised because I was having so much fun but wasn't drinking alcohol. She then said that I don't need to drink alcohol because I am drunk on life and I couldn't agree more. Some people enjoy drinking alcohol but other people don't. It is your choice whether you want to or not, and you shouldn't let anyone else dictate your personal decision.
The typical college experience paints a picture full of frat parties and heavy drinking, but that isn't what college is about. Yes, it is okay to have fun and enjoy your freedom! However, you can have a good time without drinking. You don't need to be pressured into doing something just because you can and simply because alcohol is available. You have a full life ahead of you to party and have fun. So enjoy college, have a good time, and be drunk on life!
