What a strange past year it’s been. From selfie sticks and mom jeans to flower crowns and man buns, it’s hard to say we haven’t seen it all. But that won’t stop us from squeezing the most out of these last few months of 2016. With half of the year already behind us, however, it’s time to gear up for those trends making their 2017 debut. Here’s a look at the tired and inspired.

What We’re Sick of Seeing

Chokers: While admittedly cute at times, the choker has long run its course as a daily accessory. Thrust back into the spotlight after a 15-year hiatus, it can currently be found adorning the necks of celebrities and urbanites alike—but not as the beloved tattooed style we’ve all rocked at some point or another. Designers today have opted instead for thick velvet, metal buckles, and spiked leather. BDSM vibes aside, not every day is a 90s costume party.

Random body contouring: A tip, ladies? Feet are feet are feet. No one but us is going to notice the slimming effects of bronzer on our toes, so it’s best we let the adage ā€œeverything in moderationā€ reign true for the time being.

Shaped nails: This year’s finger walk down the runway would have been incomplete without its fair share of WTF moments. But, as expected, social media was ablaze with the extreme stylings that are coffin nails, bubble nails, and stiletto nails. Embellished with the occasional 3D sticker, these manicures are eccentric at best and not at all functional. We’re much better off playing it safe with a classic square or rounded tip. At least then we’ll be able to pick coins off the ground.

The Kardashians: There are plenty of others worth ā€œkeeping up with.ā€ Enough said.

What We Should Expect to See

Soft contouring: Move over, clown contouring, 2017 is about to go au naturel. In a sudden turnaround, we’ve taken to trading the super-defined lines of years past for a dewy, barely-there look. The technique, which has earned the nickname ā€œnontouring,ā€ is a result of picking and choosing those specific areas to sculpt, whether it be the cheekbones, jawline, or nose.

Personal jewelry: Looking for a jewelry box reboot? In the spirit of simplicity, it’s time we take a minimalistic approach toward the ways in which we accessorize. Enter personal jewelry, the tamer cousin of 2010s-era statement pieces. Complete with elegant chains, tiny studs, and delicate rings, the trend is en route to becoming our favorite wardrobe staple—something we’ll put on once and never take off. All the more reason to get on board.

AƧaĆ bowls: It’s music to any health nut’s ears—our favorite smoothie-in-a-bowl isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. First popularized in Hawaii and southern California in the mid-2000s, these antioxidant-rich pick-me-ups have since found a following across cosmopolitan areas. Not that we’re surprised; blended with fruit and garnished with granola, aƧaĆ bowls make for a wonderfully tasty breakfast we can’t (and won’t) stop photographing.

The ā€œLobā€: For those of us who see a fresh chop as a remedy for beating the heat each summer, the Lob, or ā€œLong Bob,ā€ is our new go-to. The shoulder-grazing cut is often forgotten due to its low-maintenance regime, but with more and more celebs sporting shorter strands, it’s actually on track to carrying us through the colder months. And if anything complements the Lob best, it’s a new dye job. Try experimenting with honey highlights, blended auburn balayage, or, for the daring, a rich raven black.

Unisex clothing: Just when we thought Jaden Smith’s men-in-skirts campaign was spearheading the gender fluidity movement, Zara dropped a new line of genderless clothing. A marriage between soft cotton blends and a neutral color palette, the 16-piece collection is an online exclusive—for now. But that’s not to say the future isn’t bright with unisex basics. This next year should see a dramatic increase in the number of mainstream stores putting function over convention in terms of everyday wear. The upshot? More for us to choose from.

Themed Instagrams: Our favorite social network is still very much in, but this year, it’s all about making it even more pleasing to the eye with the help of a theme. By tinkering with brightness, saturation, and tint, avid Instagrammers are crafting their feeds so that each picture flows into the next. Already we’re hooked. Whether the look is bright and colorful, clean and unsaturated, or dark and moody, the result is one of uniformity—ensuring the trend will keep on keeping on.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
