As each year passes, it feels that I make resolutions that I will probably give up on. Due to either forgetting about what I wanted to accomplish, or the fact that I’m too busy trying to finish day-to-day tasks like making it to class on time and remembering to sleep every once in a while, resolutions become more stress than help. But I have decided and have given myself no choice this year. As a freshman in college, I have decided to make this year all about me.
To begin, when I say that this year is all about me, I’m not going to go full-on bitch and not care about others; I mean that it’s time for me to be selfish when it comes to my feelings and making sure I’m happy. To do so, I have decided to follow a few steps.
1. Every decision I make will be based on how the outcome affects me.
That means if I’m not going to be happy in the end, then I’m not doing it.
2. Friends and friendships
This means that all toxic friends will be removed no matter how long we haven been “friends.” Instead of staying in a “friendship” where I feel like I have to keep my true feelings or ideas to myself so that there’s no conflict, I am going to say how I feel (of course in the nicest way possible). But if the friendship isn’t going to work out, then it’s time to move on.
3. Boys (or girls depending on who you like)
So if my significant other isn’t meeting me halfway, oh well, it’s time for me to be happy! This has always been somewhat of an issue for me. I like to stick around to fix relationships because I always think that things will get better… but usually I end up getting hurt and putting my partner first. No more. It's about me!
4. Making goals that I can actually accomplish
Whatever goals you want to accomplish… this is the year! Start today! Everyone loves a little pat on the back once they have accomplished something they have longed to do. So starting now, I am setting a few goals -- whether that is joining a club and putting myself out there more, or starting with easy things like drinking more water.
Although this is list is small, I wanted to keep it short and sweet. The main point is to put yourself first. I feel that our generation may already think that we are doing that, but not in the right ways. We need to put ourselves first in meaningful ways -- by doing things that make us happy but also are not harmful to ourselves or others. I feel very strongly that it is hard to enjoy life and be kind to others when you are not happy with the person you are inside. So use this year, or this semester, to get closer to finding the person you want to be. It starts now!
