Last night CBS aired the first presidential debate, and Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton faced off in true Trump and Clinton fashion. As a 21-year-old, this is the first election I have ever been able to vote in but to be honest, I am not as educated as I should be. Although I watched the full debate last night with various college-aged students, it became clear to me that I am not alone in this boat. For the majority of college students, this is the first election that we will be able to cast a vote in. In other words, THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. College students need to get educated on this election, maybe more so than any other election in U.S. history, and I figured that a short but sweet guide will help us all decide on who we should let run this country.
Immigration
Trump: Build a wall and deport the undocumented citizens
Clinton: Everyone should be able to become a U.S. citizen without problem if they have a dream to be an American
Gun Control
Trump: We have the right to bear arms, and we are going to keep it that way.
Clinton: Increased background checks on who can and cannot purchase a gun.
Race issues
Trump: After being called out at last night's debate about his company discriminating against African American workers after being sued in the 1970s, he prized himself on owning a Palm Beach Country Club where there is no discrimination.
Clinton: There is a racial problem in this country, especially when it comes to the police and the African-American and Latino communities.
Iraq
Trump: He claims that he opposed the war from the start, but thanks to Hillary's fact checkers, the public record showed that to not be so true.
Clinton: Hillary has had to vote on the war for years now, and is adamant about working with other political leaders to put a stop to the war and ISIS once and for all.
All in all, whether you're a first-time voter or a second, third, fourth, etc. time voter, this election is one of the biggest in America's history. There are so many issues on the table that people need to educate themselves on. Issues that people need to learn about themselves and where they stand on them, rather than where their family and friends stand on them. Make sure you register to vote in this election, it's your future in your hands.
