Because the Psychology Building isn't the building that houses psychology classes.

1. Doc

What it means to other people: An abbreviation for doctor.

What it means to TU students: Our lovely mascot!

2. The Union

What it means to other people: The act of uniting two or more things.

What it means to TU students: University Union AKA the center of campus AKA the place on which you base your directions.

3. Potomac, Susquehanna, Patuxent, Loch Raven, and Chesapeake


What it means to other people: Rivers in Maryland (and a city that has a crappy reality show.)

What it means to TU students: Rooms in the Union where your club meetings can be found.

4. The Towers


What it means to other people: The Twin Towers.

What it means to TU students: Glen Towers, home to the worst dining hall on campus.

5. Douglass, Barton, Paca, and Tubman


What it means to other people: Fredrick Douglass, Clara Barton, William Paca, and Harriet Tubman.

What it means to TU students: The four dorm buildings in West Village.

6. West Privilege

What it means to other people: The privilege one gets from living in the Western Hemisphere, especially as a white male.

What it means to TU Students: What people who don't live in West Village call West Village (they're just jealous that we get our own bathrooms!)

7. UV


What it means to other people: Ultra-violet light.

What it means to TU students: University Village, the mysterious weed-smelling place to which the stairs lead.

8. Tiger in Town

What it means to other people: A tiger that has escaped from the zoo and is now roaming around town, causing chaos.

What it means to TU students: The shuttle you take when you need to go to CVS, but are too lazy to walk.

9. The Colonies

What it means to other people: The early United States, the Thirteen Colonies.

What it means to TU students: The place where all the parties are (so I'm told.)

10. LA

What it means to other people: Los Angeles.

What it means to TU students: The Liberal Arts building, although there's just as much traffic as Los Angeles.

11. The Psychology Building

What it means to other people: The building in which psychology classes are held.

What it means to TU students: The name of the building that houses education classes. The psychology classes are in the building next door.

12. Blackboard


What it means to other people: Something the teacher writes on.

What it means to TU students: A website where everything is posted (or should be posted) and your savior.

13. CVP

What it means to other people: Central Venous Pressure (so I'm led to believe after I googled "CVP" and that's what came up.)

What it means to TU students: Charles Village Pub, the place to be on a Friday night.

14. Paws

What it means to other people: The things on the bottom of animals' feet.

What it means to TU students: The café that's open until 2 AM on weekdays (bless.)

15. Off-Campus Housing

What it means to other people: Housing that is off campus.

What it means to TU students: Half of west village; on campus but not owned by Towson so it's technically "Off Campus."

16. Construction

What it means to other people: A slight inconvenience while driving, the building of roads/sidewalks.

What it means to TU students: The reason that you think you're popular because you're always getting texts only to open them and see that your commute will be delayed.

17. "The West Village Bridge will be finished by August 2017 and Residence Tower will be finished by January 2018"

What it means to other people: The bridge will be finished by August 2017 and the Residence Tower will be finished by January 2018.

What it means to TU students: You will be forced to take the long route to class and live in forced triples probably for the rest of your time in college.

18. Outtakes

What it means to other people: A scene from a movie that's filmed but not included.

What it means to TU students: The convenience/grocery store that is never busy unless it's a Thursday night, in which case everyone is there trying to use up their remaining meals.

19. SECU


What it means to other people: A credit union.

What it means to TU students: The big arena where sporting events and concerts are held.

20. Towson University


What it means to other people: A state school just outside Baltimore.

What it means to TU students: The best school in the whole world!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
