20 Things All UCSB Students Are Excited For This School Year

Ahhh, back-to-school season is finally approaching after what feels like a lifetime for us less fortunate quarter-system kids, and we Gauchos cannot be more excited to return home to the scenic coastal views and laid back Santa Barbara vibes. Here are some things we are more than excited to be reunited with this school year.

1. Freebirds nachos.

Whether you split them with friends during a late night out, or can scarf them down in one sitting like I can, there has never been a moment when one has regretted this Isla Vistan delicacy.

2. IV Sunsets.

They're the perfect shot to put on your Snapchat story that'll make your friends from home jealous and the best backdrop to relax to on the beach with a group of friends.

3. Not being judged for wearing Birkenstocks.

4. Being around people who actually know what Yerba Mate is.

5. Throwing tortillas at soccer games.

I tried it once at my cousin's AYSO game and it didn't go over so well.

6. Those mornings when you don't have class and can enjoy some Bagel Cafe.

7. Hiking on the trail to Campus Point.

Morning runs and post-class walks never looked better.

8. Deltopia.

It's everyone's favorite day they wished they remembered.

9. Del Playa in general.

Living oceanside is on every Gaucho's bucket list.

10. The fact that the beach is only a short walk away.

11. Playing beer games with people who actually know how to.

12. Spending the day for brunch or night for drinks at State Street with your friends.

13. Biking through IV.

I'm not talking about the sweaty, stressful race to class on the bike paths, but those bike rides when the sun is setting and there's a breeze running through your hair, all with a Blenders smoothie in your hand.

14. The perfect weather.

It's not too hot, not too cold, and always just sunny enough for it to be acceptable to lounge in your swim suit all day.

15. The convenience of SB Menus when you're way too lazy to get up and go somewhere to eat.

16. Shouting "Fuck FT!" at the top of your lungs whenever you drive past it.

17. Extravaganza.

It's like a mini Coachella right at home.

18. The new library.

Okay, so maybe you're not too excited about having to hit the books, but if you're going to have to do it anyways, might as well study in this gorgeous building right?

19. The parties.

Do I even have to elaborate on this one?

20. The people.

There must be something in the water here, because the people at UCSB are definitely the happiest people I've ever stumbled across.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
