OK, I'm just going to come out and say everybody loves music. Music will always be there, whether your jamming out in the car with your friends, or your sitting in bed listening to music because you had a bad day. Music is such a beautiful thing, it really is an art and it is astonishing to watch it grow through the years. Sometimes we forget the songs we used to love and cherish and who doesn't love a good song throwback? Here are 20 top hit songs in 20 years you may have forgotten.
1. 1996: "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis.
Genre: Pop. This one is a throwback for sure. Twenty years ago, but you'll know the song if you hear it. You probably won't know it well enough to sing it, but you have probably subconsciously heard it in the car or going into a store and this song is the background music.
2. 1997: "Candle in the Wind (1997)/ Something About The Way You Look Tonight" by Elton John.
Genre: Soft rock. This is a very sweet sad song he had already sung, but this time dedicated it to Princess Diana. "Candle in the Wind" was a song about Princess Diana after she passed, and he is describing her as a candle in the wind because her "candle was burned out way too soon." "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" is self- explanatory. Elton John is saying there is something very special about the way his women looks. It's a very well written and romantic song, that did great in the media.
3. 1998: "Too Close" by Next.
Genre: R&B, hiphop. Personally, I didn't remember this song, but after searching and listening to it I can tell why. It is not my type of music. Going from the sweet romantic song of 1997, to the sassy sexual song of 1998 was too much. (Personally, I like country so none of this is my type) Overall, it was just disappointing to hear as a throwback.
4. 1999: "Believe" by Cher.
Genre: Dance, pop. You will know this song. This song still plays on the radio all the time. You will probably yell the lyrics at the chorus part, because everybody knows the lyrics! This song just makes you want to get up, smile, and dance. Good choice 1999!
5. 2000: "Breathe" by Faith Hill.
Genre: Country pop. Why, hello 2000! What a great choice! We are finally at the country music. I will always love this song. This is such a sweet song she sang about a relationship, but some others take it in other ways such as health. It has multiple meanings, and its a great song.
6. 2001: "Hanging By a Moment" by LifeHouse.
Genre: Post grunge, alternative rock. You might be thinking, "What the heck is this song? I've never heard this before." Wrong. I guarantee if you look it up and listen you will know in you've heard this song before. Either way this is a very sweet song, and its a great throwback.
7. 2002: "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback
Genre: Post grunge. This song is a classic. Once again, you will realize that you have heard it before once the first sentence plays, "Never made it as a wise man." The instrumentals give a hint real quick about what song it is. Chances are this is another song you've heard on the radio thousands of time that you've really never paid attention too.
8. 2003: "In Da Club" by 50 Cent.
Genre: Hiphop. First of all, not to bash a song, but what is with the title? "Da" instead of "The" and people wonder why our generation is messed up grammatically. Our generation are the kings or queens of making up words and having horrid grammar. Maybe it's because we listened to this growing up -- and it only gets worse as more songs come into the picture. Anyway, this song can be catchy, especially the introduction with all the instrumentals. If you are into the hiphop genre, this would be a great song for you!
9. 2004: " Yeah!" by User feat. Lil John and Ludicrous.
Genre: R&B, crunk&B, hip hop.If this isn't a throwback song, I don't know what is! Remember growing up going to birthday parties at ice rinks and roller rinks? Well chances are you heard this song while skating! Everybody knew this song back then! I remember getting ready to go out with my friends and getting ready to this song! This song really just makes you want to yell, "Yeah, yeah, yeah!"
10. 2005: "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey.
Genre: R&B. Personally, I am not too familiar with this song. I have heard it a few times, but its a sweet song, and if you listen to the words she is singing from her heart and feelings. She really means what she's singing. Mariah Carey is also a fabulous singer!
11. 2006: "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter
Genre: Pop. Did you have a bad day? You should probably listen to this song. If you had a bad day, sing a sad song just to turn it around! Don't have bad days, cheer up by listening to this song!
12. 2007: "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce
Genre: Pop, R&B.The moment you all been waiting for, a Beyonce song has finally hit the charts in 2007. Most people are obsessed over this "queen" right now, so you will be thrilled to hear her throwback. Beyonce also has more recent songs she is known for, but we can't forget about her top hit in 2007!
13. 2008: Low By: Flo Rida feat. T-pain
Genre: Hip hop. "Shawty had them Apple Bottom Jeans (jeans). Boot with the fur (with the fur)." Don't lie -- I know you sang those lyrics in your head while reading that! Enough said, this is the most known, best song on this list.
14. 2009: "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas
Genre: Electro hop. Fun fact! In this very repetitive song, the say "boom" 99 times throughout the whole song.
15. 2010: "TiK ToK" by Ke$ha
Genre: Electro-hop. Ah... Ke$ha. Poor girl has been through a lot recently, but it'll all be over soon hopefully. I loved listening to Ke$ha's music at the time, and I hope she'll keep singing and maybe even produce another album.
16. 2011: "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele
Genre: Pop, soul, blues. I have always loved Adele. I listened to her before this song became popular and I knew she was talented. This is such a great song, and don't deny that you never tried to hold that high note.
17. 2012: "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye feat. Kimbra
Genre: Indie pop, pop rock, alternative rock, indie rock. What was this song and where did it come from? Who were the singers? This song style came out of no where and made the top song of 2012. Great job mysterious song writers and way to make a great song!
18. 2013: "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz
Genre: Comedy, hip hop, hipster hop, pop-rap. Are you going to "pop some tags" because you only got "$20 in your pocket?" I loved this song and so did all my friends. We all used to "rap" this song together when taking rides in the car and blaring music. This is just all around a hysterical song, but I would not recommend "popping tags in thrift shops..."
19. 2014: "Happy" by Pharrell Williams
Genre: Soul, neo-soul. This song just really makes you want to get up, clap your hands, smile and dance around with all your friends. Just be happy!
20. 2015: "Uptown Funk!" By: Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars
Genre: Funk, boogie. Well, hands down, this song deserved to be the top hit. This took a step back in time to the funk age with a modern age twist. Overall such a great song.
21. 2016 (as of July 16): "One Dance" by Drake feat. Wizkid & Kyla
Genre: Dancehall. Hopefully this changed by the end of 2016, because I don't understand how this song is number one right now. Drake is an awesome rapper and singer, but I just don't feel this song is a fit for him.
