20 Things to Do When You're Bored

It's summer and that means having too much time on your hands if you're anything like me. And while I don't mind watching grass grow from time to time, I don't think I want to do it for 3 months.

All of us experience boredom. Living in a fast paced high-tech world has made our clock go a million times faster than it was for people 1,000,100 and even 20 years ago. Incidentally, we’re a culture that thrives off of doing more and constantly being busy. This deep-rooted desire often leaves us rather upset and bored easily where our minds are so wound up we can’t think of what to do.

I have decided to compile a nice list of things you can do when you’re bored and want to make something out of your day or at least satiate that little monster inside of you. Here goes.

  1. Take a walk and be mindful of nature. Think about how the sky looks and the way the trees are blowing in the wind. Think about what you had for breakfast. Anything goes when you’re out ruminating in your thoughts.
  2. Do some yoga. Really?! Yes, go do some yoga. It will tame your mind and teach you something new all at the same time. Some really great yogis you can check out are Cassey Ho (aka Blogilates who can pretty much do everything and Tara Stiles (who makes short 10 minute videos and hour-long ones in case you’re feeling funky).
  3. Try a new language. The internet (and your phone) is full of applications and websites designed to help you become a master at virtually any language you wish. Watch videos on YouTube and become a professional overnight. It’s actually quite fun.
  4. Dance your heart out. Pick your favorite upbeat song (mine is Where Does the Good Go by Tegan and Sara). Give in to you inner frustration and become a queen/king/royal on the dance floor.
  5. But if you’re not into singing or dancing, just plug in some headphones to your iPod/phone, put it on shuffle, and feel the music within you.
  6. Try something silly, whether juggling or making cupcakes. You’ll be having a good time when there’s flour on your ceiling!
  7. Reorganize your room and rearrange your furniture. It’ll keep you busy and clean up your place. Bonus!
  8. Start a blog. It can be about anything.
  9. Look up some cool articles like these
  10. Watch some Ted Talks. You’ll be inspired and you’ll pretty much be an expert on “How to Spot A Liar.”
  11. Plan a trip. Think hotels, activities, museums and everything in between. Even if you aren’t going it’s always nice to have something to look forward to one day. An adventure!
  12. Make a dream board. Cut out a bunch of cute pictures from your magazines and print out some inspirational quotes and fun little ditties online and post it all on a board. Hang it up and be inspired every day!
  13. Learn to dance Single Ladies and become the coolest kid on the dance floor
  14. Learn to code. I have yet to do it but everyone says it;s pretty neat, and it’s also nice to add to your resume. How about this?
  15. Read a great book. And by that I mean read a highly esteemed book from here? The 50 Books to Read Before you Die.
  16. Paint a picture or sketch your face. It’s interesting to view how you see yourself (or even whether you’re the next Picasso).
  17. Pretend you’re a spy and go to a shopping mall, pick your target, and become a modern James Bond.
  18. Make an entire meal. Appetizer, entrée, Main dish, dessert. Channel your inner Julia Child.
  19. Go on YouTube and watch the masters at work. I suggest “People falling slowly” or “funny pranks.” They never get old
  20. Give in to your boredom. Il Dolce Far Niente as the Italian say. The sweetness of doing nothing, truly. Be happy you can relax and enjoy yourself like an old Italian grandfather sipping wine. You’re pretty lucky!

Best hopes for curing your boredom. Try any of these and you’ll be good to go. Much love!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
