The story goes the bigger, fluffier, more decadent and unnecessary the better. With each batch of students entering the college world, expectations for on campus living gets higher. No longer are the bare essentials acceptable. Stores like Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Pottery Barn now cater to this widely developing market of luxury college living.
It seems everything now has a dorm size—coffee makers, couches, duvets, refrigerators, closet organizers, mattress pads, and anything else you can think of. The days of shopping for notebooks, binders, and the perfect pens are old news. Now its all about the bells and whistles of dorm design.
1. Memory Foam Mattress Pads
Lumbar support is always a nice perk and college students certainly benefit from good sleep, but a basic pad will do if you must bring one.
2. Coffee Machine
If you don't drink it everyday, don't lug it to college.
3. A Tablet
A laptop and phone should be enough electronic devices. Unless your laptop can become a tablet, I think having a tablet is on the extra side.
4. An Iron/Ironing Board/Steamer
Unless you think you're going to be undergoing multiple interviews or in the business school, chances are people won't pay any mind to a few wrinkles. Save yourself the space.
5. A Television
While it has become a college dorm essential, it didn't used to be this way even five years ago. Maybe I'm the odd one here in saying all I need is my laptop and Netflix.
6. Anything Designer
Save yourself the headache. Between college parties and the every day grind of campus life, you'll probably be more concerned about damaging or ruining your purse, watch, necklace, sandals, or clothes. You also have to take into consideration the possibility of theft. Its best to leave the nice things at home for special occasions.
7. A DVD player
Unless you're a movie buff or majoring in film, you're probably okay to leave this at home.
8. A Toaster
Unless you are a toast fanatic and eat it every day, leave it at home.
9. A Ton of Pillows/Throw Blankets
Your university-issued XL twin bed can only hold so many pillows and unless you're going to school where its always cold, one blanket should be enough.
10. Chair/Futon
Extra seating is a perk, especially when entertaining guests, but make sure you take your dorm square footage into consideration. Chances are all the added furniture will just end up being extra.
11. Your Entire Closet
Its best to bring just one season of clothes at a time. You won't be wearing your winter coat and boots in September.
12. Space Heater/Humidifier
Let your thermostat do all the hard work.
13. Plants and Planters
I'm all about making your room homey, but there's homey and then there's jungle status. Make sure you have time to take care of all your greenery before you spend the money on it all. Even succulents take work!
14. Video Games
You won't have as much time to play them as you think.
15. A Printer
Your college gives you a printing allowance so you won't need one and it'll just take up space on your desk.
16. Water Filter
If no one has died of water contamination yet, leave the filter at home.
17. Your Stereo
No matter how much you love music you won't need your super deluxe speaker at college, besides you'll be sharing walls with other students and they may or may not share your music taste.
18. Candles
Chances are your dorm restricts them so they will just sit out and collect dust.
19. Juicer/Blender
Unless you have a daily smoothie, same the outlets for other more necessary appliances like fridges and microwaves.
20. Animals
Leave your turtle, hedgehog, and hamster at home. Your at college to learn and go off on your own and you don't won't to risk the possibility of killing your beloved pet.
