This is a scary and exciting and frustrating and beautiful time in our lives.
You are not alone.
Some 20-somethings have their life figured out, and that’s great.
This is not for those 20-somethings.
I’m 20-something and I don’t know what I want to do with the rest of my life. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I’m not married. I don’t even have a significant other – my choice. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I don’t want kids right now. I want them in a few years, for sure. But right now I want to do me. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I’m not working at the place that is going to be my career. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and sometimes I have to call my mom to ask her how to do things still, or for advice, or just because sometimes I still need my mom. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and while I don’t drink as much as college-me did, I still enjoy drinking. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I love Disney World just as much as the next 6 year old. It keeps my inner-child alive, reminds me there’s happiness in the world and is a very legitimate vacation choice for me. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I am struggling with Depression and Anxiety. Sometimes my days are too dark and sometimes the things that stress me out seem silly to you, but they’re very real to me. I have hard days. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I’m indecisive. Sometimes I can’t make up my mind between which ice cream I want and sometimes I can’t make up my mind on what I want out of life. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I’m broke. Ramen is a frequent meal for me. My car often is running on fumes. Let me worry about me, I’m learning how to be frugal, and just trying to start out on my own. That doesn’t leave much money in the bank always. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and hungry. Physically, yes (see last reminder) but also metaphorically. I’m hungry to live my life, find my passion and see the world. That's okay.
I’m 20-something and I don’t know who I am yet. I have lived with myself for the last 20-something years and I haven’t figured me out yet. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I change my mind. Sometimes it’s on silly things - I said I wanted chicken for dinner but here I am eating spaghetti, I changed my mind. Sometimes it’s on bigger things – the major I chose when I was 18 isn’t what I see myself doing for the next 40 years. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and don’t have a large group of friends. Instead, I’ve narrowed it down to just my tight little circle, those I can’t live without. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I eat junk food…probably too much of it. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I’m in debt. I’m in a lot of debt between the car I drive, the bills I have, and student loans. It leads to me being stressed a lot but I’ll figure it out, I just haven’t yet. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I still need help – a lot of help – when it comes to filing my taxes. My mom does mine. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I pay rent, not a mortgage. I live in an apartment – maybe a crappy apartment. I haven’t bought my own house yet. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and am likely to date a few more duds before The One shows up. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I don’t know it all. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and sometimes when I’m sick, it doesn’t matter how old I am. I just wish my mom was there to take care of me. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I don’t have the latest iPhone, or the newest that. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and my future scares me but I’m so excited for it. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and I have beliefs and viewpoints. They deserved to be at least respected. You don’t have to agree with them, and they may not always be the opinion of the majority. That’s okay.
I’m 20-something and sometimes I want cuddle up in my PJs and watch Netflix instead of going out. That’s okay.
We as 20-somethings are feeling pressure from parents, society and those peers of ours who have gotten settled in their lives sooner than us to settle down, to "be an adult," to do all these "big girl" things and to grow up. Some of us haven't done that, and that's okay. Some of us have, and that's okay.
It's okay.
