It’s that time of year again where everyone starts to make cliche resolutions that nobody ever really sticks to. Working out, eating healthy, giving up your guilty pleasure, it’s all been done before.
I’m not saying the above resolutions aren’t ones to make, however I am saying that there are resolutions that nobody really thinks about. Being in your 20s is a transitional period. It’s the time where being a kid and becoming an adult meets. There’s a lot of questioning when it comes to what we should be doing with our lives. Here are 20 resolutions every 20-year-old should make every year.
1) Start, Work on, or Finish your Education
Getting an education is important. It doesn’t matter where you go or what you want to do. Your knowledge is something that nobody can ever take away from you.
2) Practice Giving
Give more. Give to your friends, give to your family, give to your community. Give advice, give a hand, give a smile. It’s insane how much pleasure one can get from giving. (Seeing the other person’s reaction is pretty awesome as well.)
3) Live in the Moment
Put your phone down. Enjoy your meal without enjoying facebook. This one goes along with giving. Give your full attention to the people who make time to be with you. We live in a busy world enough as it is, you should be thankful that someone you care about gave you their time of day
4) Love Yourself
Stop wishing you were someone else. People spend so much time wishing that they forget to make an effort on themselves. Wish to make yourself the best version of you and love who that person is. Not a version of somebody else.
5) Take Care of Your Body
Going to college, having work, trying to have a social life, and being involved can take a toll on your body. Give your body some extra attention. Get up and start moving, eat delicious food, and get some Zzz’s!
6) Spend Time with Your Family
When you're in your 20’s, you start to make the transition of leaving the nest and making your own. Don’t get too caught up in your new world that you forget about the ones who brought you into it.
7) Explore
Explore your city, the world, your interests. Stop being so closed minded and start trying new things and experiencing new places. You're young. You don’t need to make your mind up yet about the rest of your life. And you definitely shouldn’t if you’ve been sheltered in your own little world.
8) Don’t Give Up
As Kid President might say, “Life is tough, but so are you.”
9) Laugh a Little…or a Lot
Self explanatory. Just do it.
10) Give Yourself a Break
We screw up and we are nowhere near perfect. We all know the flaws of people we love and yet we still love them. Why can’t we do the same for ourselves?
11) Learn From Your Mistakes
We make them big, we make them small. Regardless, if it ends badly but it made you feel something, it must have been for a good reason.
12) Learn to Accept What You Can’t Change
Life throws you all kinds of crazy. Only some of that crazy is controllable. Stop the unneeded stress now and read number 13.
13) Change what you Can
Don’t like somebody in your life? Don’t like your major? Don’t like your job? Don’t like yourself? Good, because those are all things YOU can change. If you have control over a situation you don’t like, why are you still complaining? Do something!
14) Think For Yourself
Stop worrying about what others think, stop looking to please your parents, have your own opinions. It’s your thoughts you have to deal with all day, not theirs’.
15) Ask Questions
How do I pay taxes? How do I thaw a chicken? Do I love what I’m doing? Can I live off ramen? What the heck is a cover letter? Ask all kinds of questions. If you don’t ask, you won’t know.
16) Think About Finances
Everyone is at different levels when it comes to this one. Don’t have a savings account? Open one. Don’t know how student loans work? (I don’t either) Learn. Trying to make an adult purchase like a car or a house, do some research. Work on those adult skills.
17) Tell the People You Love that You Love Them
Don’t throw the "L" word around, but definitely let the ones who matter know.
18) Do Your Hobby More Often
School and work are important. But don’t forget to do the little things that you love.
Insider Tip: Hobbies will help keep you sane.
19) Don’t Worry
My advice for you is to read number 20.
