20 Promises to Myself As I Enter My 20s

As I say goodbye to my adolescence and teenage years, I look forward to the next decade of my life: my 20s. Ages 10-19 weren’t all that bad. Between middle school, awkward phases, high school, trying to get into college and surviving the first year and a half of it, let’s just say I’m exciting to see what years 20-29 will bring. Now that I feel officially more like an adult, I’ve decided to make 20 promises to myself that will guide me through the next 10 years. Here they are:

1. Be kind, always

If there’s anything I’ve learned over the past 20 years, it’s that everyone you meet is fighting his or her own battle. Always be kind to those around you.

2. Expect the unexpected

Life will inevitably throw you in directions you won’t be able to predict. Accept and move forward no matter what circumstances.

3. Don’t be afraid to take chances

If you want something, go for it. It is definitely not worth it to wonder “what if?” for the rest of your life.

4. Stand up for what you believe is right

Even if you’re standing alone, have the courage to stand up for what you believe is right. It’s important to have a moral compass.

5. Never settle

It’s not worth it to settle for a job you don’t love to a city you don’t want to live in. Be courageous in realizing your worth. Hard work will pay off.

6. Be open to new things

If the past 20 years have taught me anything, it’s that you never know when you will find your new best friend or your new favorite restaurant. Always be open to new experiences.

7. Say "thank you"

Maybe it’s said too much, but never let someone else’s act(s) of kindness go unnoticed. You would appreciate a “thank you,” right?

8. Always tip generously

I’ve never been a waitress, but I can understand how good it would feel to have your hard work being noticed. It may cost you a couple extra dollars, but it’s for someone else and that’s worth it.

9. Help others whenever you can

Take time out of your own day to help someone else. It’s not all about you, ya know?

10. Realize it’s OK to say no

I’ve always had a tendency to say "yes" to everything, which is good. But you can’t do everything. Realize it’s okay to say "no" sometimes.

11. Be genuine

There’s nothing worse in this world than being fake. Be yourself and if they don’t like you for you, then they aren’t worth having in your life.

12. Take time for yourself

Even if you have a busy schedule, put time aside for yourself. Do something you’ve always wanted to do. Everyone has a list of the things they have always wanted to do.

13. Find your passion

Do something that you love. Always make sure you’re helping others. It’s as simple as that.

14. Put away the camera every once and awhile

Capture memories, yes. But enjoy something when it’s happening to you. You wouldn’t want to be on the top of the Eiffel Tour just taking pictures. Take it all in.

15. Turn your phone off for a significant period of time at least once a week

Disconnect. Don’t rely on your phone. Take a detox break every once in a while.

16. Take naps

Trust me, naps are the best. They’re worth it, so take them.

17. Never stop learning

Every day is a new day and a new opportunity to learn. Never take that for granted.

18. Travel often

There’s a big world out there and it’s all for you to experience and see. So many cultures, so many monuments. Strive to see it all.

19. Have fun!

Let loose every once in awhile and do something fun for yourself!

20. Go with the flow

Go with the flow and realize that you can’t control it all. Your 20s will be a journey of good times and bad. Embrace it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
