20 Life Lessons I've Learned In 20 Years

Whether it's the easy way, or hard way, eventually you learn them

20 Life Lessons I've Learned In 20 Years
Sarah Vaughn

Some of you will probably find this familiar because I posted this on my blog a couple of days ago.

I turned 20 over Thanksgiving break and throughout that week, I thought of 20 life lessons I'd learned in my 20-years. Some of them I've learned recently, while others I learned a long time ago. Either way, I think everyone eventually learns them. Sometimes it's best to learn sooner than later, but God works in weird and wondrous ways. Everything happens for a purpose.

1. People change and it has nothing to do with you.

2. Not everyone is meant to stay in your life forever. I heard a quote once that said something like, "Some people come into your life for a season. Others come into your life for a lifetime," and that's so true.

3. Forgive others. Jesus commands us to do it & the only person it's really hurting is you.

4. Spiders & bugs, in general, are to be killed by anyone older (or younger) than you.

5. Get used to saying, "I promise I'm [insert current age]." (This is for the short people out there).

6. Put your phone down and live in the moment.

7. But on the other hand, snap a few pictures. Capture some moments so they'll stay with you forever.

8. Naps are good, especially often.

9. Skipping class once (or twice) won't kill your or your grade (sorry mom). Give yourself a break sometimes.

10. Speaking of mom & dad too, they aren't idiots. Although you may have determined that in your early teen years.

11. You will meet people you don't get along with. Put your big girl, or boy, pants on and deal with it.

12. Just be yourself.

13. Be adventurous, but also be cautious. A healthy balance between the two is good.

14. Always tell the people you love that you love them.

15. When you feel like stargazing or watching the sunrise/sunset. Just do it. Don't think about the sleep you might lose. It's worth it in the end.

16. You're going to get knocked down in life. You always have the choice to stay down or get back up and try again. Choose the latter.

17. It's okay to say NO

18. "If you don't love yourself, it's impossible for you to love others. You can't give away what you don't have." - Joyce Meyer

19. The most important thing to always remember in life is that "I Am Second." There is nothing more important than a personal relationship with God. If you don't have one, you need one.

20. You may look like a child now, but once you turn 40 you'll be thanking the good Lord above for making you the way you are.

Here's to 20 more years and living the life that God has set me up for.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
