It’s the beginning of March, and that means it’s Spring Break season. Some of us are booking last minute flights to Cabo, getting ready for a camping trip to Joshua Tree or making hotel reservations for Cancún. And then there are those of us who are getting ready to do nothing but sleep in or eat ourselves into a coma.
Spring Break trips can be costly, and not everyone is willing to spend $600 on a trip that will be spent primarily at Mango Deck or Cabo Wabo. But this doesn’t mean that we have to miss out on the fun of Spring Break -- we just have to do it differently.
If you’re on a low budget this spring season, here are 20 free things to do to make sure you have fun:
1. Go to IKEA and plan out what furniture you want in your future house.
2. Create your own movie theatre by setting up dark curtains and popping popcorn.
3. Create a new music playlist that inspires you to get moving.
4. Try geocaching in your area. It’s like discovering tiny treasures all throughout your city.
5. Start out every day by going for a run/walk/jog.
6. Pack a lunch and ride your bike to the park for a picnic.
7. Curl up in bed with your favorite book.
8. Go through old clothes and donate the things you don't need to charity.
9. Hang out at the animal shelter and play with furry friends that need a home.
10. Rearrange your room to change things up.
11. Pick three food items that you already have in your pantry, search a recipe on Pinterest that includes those three items, and then make the recipe.
12. If you're somewhere warm, go to the beach or lake and enjoy the sun.
13. Go to a busy place in town and "people watch" those passing by.
14. Get a head start on any homework you may have.
15. Invite a friend along to go for a hike.
16. Go to a baseball game at your local park, they're almost always free.
17. Search for a yoga video on YouTube and give it a try.
18. Volunteer to babysit, you may even get paid for it.
19. Take a bunch of pictures on your phone to try and create a new Instagram theme.
20. Make your own body scrub with sugar and oil, and then treat yourself to a well-deserved spa day.
Just because you have to stay home for the break doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun. It may seem hard to find something to do when on a low budget, but it isn't all that difficult. If you want to have a cost-effective Spring Break, all you have to do is be a little creative with your activities.
Spring Break is meant to be a time where you can relax and recuperate before the end of the semester. So take the time for yourself and do something that you really enjoy, that way when you come back to school, you can finish out the semester strong.
