My music taste has a very wide range, but my favorite genre of music is alternative/indie rock. I love the way the soft sounds sweep me away, the lyrics being so beautifully written and going deep into the roots of my emotions. I love popular artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Lana del Rey, just as much as I love not-as-popular artists such as BORNS and Halsey, just as much as I love artists people have barely heard of, such as The Belle Game and Wickerbird.
My friend Sabrina, a sophomore at Washington College in Maryland, recently wrote a music review of a band she enjoys. This gave me a wonderful idea.
I wanted to discuss one of my favorite bands, The 1975. When that band is brought up, people either know exactly who they are or have never heard of them. There's no in-between! They are most popular for songs such as "Chocolate", "Sex", and "Girls".
After a long while, The 1975 came out with their second album on February 26: "I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it". My boyfriend, also a fan of the band, and I were listening to Spotify when we both came to the realization that neither of I had actually listened to the album the whole way through. We stopped what we were doing and immediately started listening. That being said, I thought I'd do a review on this masterpiece.
1. "The 1975": The band began their first album with a song of the same title as an introduction to the album itself. The song begins with a crescendo of instrumentals, then suddenly stopping. A few seconds later, echoic voices sing lyrics in a sort of eerie fashion. I find it beautiful!
2. "Love Me": This song has been on the radio a few times. It was the first single off the album. It reminds me and others a lot of 80's rock; the upbeat tempo and fun beat makes it practically impossible not to dance around.
3. "UGH!": Just like "Love Me", this song reminds me a lot of what would be popular back in the 1980's. The foot-tapping sound and interesting difference in Matty Healy (the lead singer)'s voice makes this song one of my favorites.
4. "A Change Of Heart": Instrumentally, this song is one right out of an 80s or early 90s movie. Lyrics depicting a classic break-up song, the instrumentals behind it makes it that much more upbeat in a sense. The song is beautifully contrasting.
5. "She's American": This song reminds me a lot of the first album. The head-bopping beat makes me fall in love with Matty's voice the whole way through.
6. "If I Believe You": This song is absolutely beautiful. The first 25 seconds is a beautiful arrangement of sounds, moving toward a relatively slow, steady beat, sounding a little like a vibe from The Weeknd. The beauty in the lyrics is incredibly deep, as well. The song depicts Jesus. Healy is an atheist, but this song opens up to that entity of whom he does not believe. He is showing his further questioning and pleading towards something to help him through life. This song is truly one of the best ones on the album.
7. "Please Be Naked": A truly beautiful, slow instrumental arrangement. There are no lyrics in this one, just instruments. The song is slow, each instrument transitioning into the next. It is 4 and a half minutes : of pure beauty.
8. "Lostmyhead": Like "She's American", this song reminds me of the first album, but in a different way. Each of Healy's songs have totally different sounds, and that's why I love the band so much. This song is slower but louder, making it more powerful.
9. "The Ballad Of Me And My Brain": This song is the shortest on the album, besides the introductory song. It's one of my favorites, as well. It begins as slow and instrumental, then becomes very passionate. Healy is pleading trying to "find his brain", his voice going from singing to basically talking in a passionate tone...this song is very beautiful.
10. "Somebody Else": This song is much slower and sadder. The instruments remind me of the first album in that they have the same type of sound that is typical of the band. The lyrics, however, are very beautifully and passionately sung in a higher key. The song depicts Healy having to cope with the fact someone he had a romantic partnership with wants somebody else.
11. "Loving Someone": This song is heavy on background vocals. The constant "Yeah, you should be loving someone, oh, oh, loving someone" is what sticks out the most in this song. The lyrics are delivered fast and the instruments in the background correlate beautifully.
12. "I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it": The long, beautiful title that claimed the title of the album itself. This song has very little lyrics; it is mainly fueled by instrumentals. It goes through different sounds throughout the entirety of the song, telling a story of themselves.
13. "The Sound": This song can easily be described as a power ballad. I could absolutely see this as the more "pumped-up" song on the album. It's very fist-pumping, head-nodding, and foot-tapping!
14. "This Must Be My Dream": Another favorite. This song has a nice tempo and is an AMAZING song to drive to.
15. "Paris": ANOTHER favorite. The lyrics are adorable, the instrumentals are addicting, the song itself is catchy, this song is just all-around perfect.
16. "Nana": This song is definitely the saddest. The sound is totally different from the rest of the album. With an acoustic guitar being the primary instrument, Healy sings slowly, like a lullaby. As you probably guessed, the lyrics are a tribute to his late grandmother of whom he misses dearly.
17. "She Lays Down": Another primary instrument being the guitar, this song is very different but very gorgeous. This song sounds like it had not been tampered with. The sound of his voice, the sound of the guitar, and especially the first 30 seconds of the song makes it seem like the song was recorded this once and put onto the album. The pure sound makes this absolutely beautiful to listen to.
This album and this band are absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend having a listen to at least one of the songs. The 1975 is so unique; their sound is something that is usually unheard of in the music world. Please, log onto Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, what have you, and have a listen to the many gorgeous songs by this amazing band!
