With the new year comes New Year's resolutions that range anywhere from working out more to learning how to cook, or spending more quality time with family. Starting a new year is a great opportunity to be better than the people we were last year and to make new goals for ourselves. As this year started, I began to think of ways that I could be a better person than I was last year both emotionally and physically. I realized that to change my life I don't have to make major changes to notice an improvement. Rather, simple, small things can make a difference. Here are 19 things that you can do to change your life this year:

1. Spend an hour a day doing something that you enjoy whether it is exercising, reading, shopping, spending time with friends, or cooking.

2. Put away your cell phone when you go out to dinner with family, friends or significant other.

3. Say yes to every opportunity that gets thrown your way. If you get an offer for an internship, say yes, because you never know how it can change your future. If you get the opportunity to travel, do it while you have no other obligations.

4. Let go of the small stuff and learn to forgive.

5. Make a commitment to being healthy, but understand that some days it's OK to eat cupcakes and stay in bed while others you should eat a salad and workout. Life is all about balance.

6. Don't compete with other people; compete with yourself. You will start improving your life the second you realize that life isn't a competition. Instead it's about improving to be your best self.

7. Don't stick to a strict plan. Life changes so fast and sometimes it is better to make plans as you go along. Nobody's life ends up exactly as they plan.

8. Be humble.

9. Take pictures. Someday everything will be a memory and you'll value being able to look back.

10. Stick to your goals. The most important thing when trying to reach a goal is to be consistent. Realize that you have to work towards your goal every single day.

11. Work on improving your time-management skills. Starting that paper a few days before it is due will make your life way less stressful.

12. Don't stress about things that are out of your control.

13. Listen to your grandparents. They have a lifetime of experience to share with you and you can learn valuable life lessons from your grandparents.

14. Ask for advice when you need it.

15. Take a vacation and explore a new part of the world.

16. Volunteer for a cause that you care about. We all have causes that have touched our lives and we all can make a difference fighting against cancer, Alzheimer's, homelessness, etc.

17. Take chances.

18. No matter how many times you have been burned, never give up on looking for love.

18. Realize that it's OK not to be happy all of the time. Once in a while it is OK to have a bad day and spend the night watching Netflix and eating ice cream.

19. Embrace change. Change is hard for everybody but many great things can come with change.

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
