The 19 Stages of Being Home for the Summer

Home cooked meals are glorious—but curfew sure isn’t

The 19 Stages of Being Home for the Summer

After almost a year spent away from home in the damp, drab walls of a college dorm, moving back home for the three months of summer break was a little bit of a culture shock. With the summer drawing to a close, here are the ups—and downs—you probably experienced as you re-adjusted to living with your family.

1. Hugging your parents extra hard because it’s been so long since you’ve seen them.

2. Basking in the glory of having your own room (or feeling perfectly comfortable screaming at your sister for not cleaning if you still share).

3. Crying tears of joy when you take your first at-home shower in a normal-sized, individual bathroom with great water pressure and no shower shoes.

4. Having your first fight with one of your siblings—and feeling oddly comforted by the fact that nothing has changed between you.

5. Falling back into your routine of constantly bickering with your siblings, and kind of cherishing it because you miss them—although you won’t often admit it—when you’re away at school.

6. Being annoyed about having to tell your parents where you’re going and who you’re with every time you go out—and then smiling when you remember it’s because they care about you so much (but mostly just being annoyed).

7. Getting even more annoyed if your parents give you a curfew—um guys, I can drive a car and vote, can’t you just let me be?!

8. Feeling nostalgic when you reunite with your high school friends and trade stories about your lives now.

9. Missing your college friends when you want to go talk to them and then remember they don’t live down the hall anymore.

10. Getting super excited for dinner now that your dining options are home-cooked instead of being confined to Sadler or the caf.

11. Realizing how much better your lunch tastes when your mom makes it.

12. Yet, still going through Wawa withdrawal when you’re craving some mac and cheese and your favorite convenience store isn’t a five-minute walk from your house.

13. Smiling as you cruise around town in your parents’ car instead of walking around everywhere.

14. Feeling excited but also slightly weirded out when you can drive to a store and try clothes on instead of ordering online and taking a guess at your size.

15. Loving the fact that mail comes straight to you instead of having to walk to the post office to pick it up, because now you don't have to get dressed and go outside.

16. But missing your package receipt notification emails from the post office when you just have to sit around all day and wait for whatever you ordered to arrive at your front door.

17. Loving the feeling of relaxation that comes with no classes or homework, but quickly realizing that void is filled with the newfound stress of your summer job or internship.

18. Craving being back at school with all of your freedoms and friends.

19. And missing home already when you think about leaving.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
