In honor of my 19th birthday this Friday, I decided to go down memory lane and reflect on all the things I've learned. Being on this Earth for almost two decades has taught me so many life lessons that it was hard to narrow them down. I'm grateful I learned these 19 things sooner rather than later.

1. Though substantially underrated, positivity can change any negative situation.

Looking at the glass half full instead of half empty will leave you with the power to overcome any obstacle.

2. Smiling makes you happier, more attractive, and more approachable.

It's true, and you will witness it in every person you meet. Only good can come out of trying it yourself.

3. You hold a lot of power when you use someone's name.

A name isn't just a language symbol, it is a part of a person's identity. Saying it out loud holds significant meaning of your connection with that person.

4. Ask for help.

Don't be afraid. Everyone has their struggles. You might as well get the job done right with the aid of others.

5. Take the time to make an incredible music playlist, or two or three.

It is your choice whether to pursue a musical talent or not, but always make the time to appreciate music, for music is the healer of the soul.

6. Give yourself a portion of the day to think and observe in complete silence.

Putting away the phone and any other distraction will leave you alone with your thoughts. It is healthy to reflect, meditate, and enjoy some well-deserved solitude.

7. Stay away from people who contradict everything you say.

If someone constantly makes you feel inferior by contradicting what you say or do, run!

8. Everyone does things at their own pace, and that's OK.

We might not like it but that is the way it is. Enjoy whatever life stage you are at now and stop looking at other people's progress.

9. Be spontaneous.

While having a plan is OK, being spontaneous once in awhile allows you to live in the moment, try something new, and feel free.

10. There is a difference between being nice and being kind.

Being nice is the action that takes place, but being kind is the internal motivation with no recognition needed.

11. Follow your passion.

As cliche of advice as this may be, our passions help us make sense of the world. It is how we grow, connect with others, and find happiness.

12. Ignoring what other people think gives you the upper hand.

There is no other you than you. You are unique, beautiful, inspiring, and the haters don't deserve a second thought.

13. Love your family and friends like there is no tomorrow.

Frankly, you don't know what you would do without them. Take every opportunity to tell them you love them in your actions and words.

14. Dance even if you can't do it well.

Dancing I have found is one of the rawest expressions of emotion. It's also super fun to partake in so find a good song and let loose!

15. Get educated and study the world.

We are stuck on this Earth, so we might as well learn about it. History has told us that knowledge in any society is power.

16. Trust your instinct.

Our body and brain are our best defense mechanisms so take advantage of it. You just need to pay attention in order to hear it.

17. Travel.

If there is any chance to travel do it! Take your time during the journey and embrace the destination.

18. Do something that scares you every day.

Life in fear is no way to live. Doing something that scares you daily makes you a stronger person and lets you live life to the fullest.

19. Show that you love yourself.

Take care of your body and give yourself some slack by embracing the insecurities. Most importantly, let your love of self encourage others to do the same.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
