19 Lessons Learned In 19 Years
Whicdn

As I celebrated my 19th birthday last week, it felt about the same as any other birthday. I was blessed with overwhelming love from friends and family, and I could not help but feel nostalgic as to how I got to where I am today. I have learned so many lessons over the years that I cannot keep track of them all, but here are 19 of the best lessons I have learned in 19 years.

1. Surround yourself by people who make you want to be a better person.

Friendship should make you feel good.

2. Pessimism is never going to work.

3. Always be polite.

Nothing gives you the license to treat someone poorly.

4. Going off of that, never excuse being downright rude as “being honest.”

There is a way to give your opinion tastefully — you don’t need to be a jerk about it.

5. Don’t be late.

Sure, things come up, but never suggest that your time is more important than others'.

6. Some of the best memories are made on the nights when your friends drag out out when all you wanted to do was stay in.

Say yes to things sometimes, even when you don’t want to. You never know when you are bound for an incredible experience.

7. Stop taking yourself so seriously.

Life is a lot more fun with a sense of humor.

8. Wear what makes you feel good.

Never judge clothing by how it looks on the hanger. You are the ultimate hanger. (#werk)

9. Always choose happy.

10. Try not to invest so much time in gossip.

It’s poison, always ending up with hurt feelings and gut-wrenching regret.

11. Remember that the driver who cut you off might be going to see a sick loved one in the hospital, or to their first job interview in weeks.

Everyone has a story to tell, so never jump to conclusions.

12. God loves you infinitely more than you could ever conceive possible.

You need not fear, He is holding you in the palm of his hand.

13. Love selflessly.

14. Everyone has something important to say if you listen.

15. Anything can be accomplished with relentless persistence and courage.

16. Take pride in who you are.

You are the very best you that there is. Show yourself off to the world, because you rock.

17. Take inspiration from kids.

They are tiny humans that only want to have fun, and they are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

18. There are lessons learned every day if you pay attention.

19. Always be kind.

Be kind to your family, your friends, strangers, animals, the Earth. The world can always use more kindness.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
