20 Things Every "Nerd" Can Relate To

Trust us, we're future doctors, lawyers, teachers and engineers.

Some of us take school way too seriously, or at least that is how every one on the outside looking in perceives it. The question we hear almost daily is "Can I copy your homework?" and our lives are consumed by textbooks, term papers and flashcards. Some may call us "nerds," others may call us "geeks," and a more complimentary term would be "studious." Whatever we may be called, here are 20 things every "nerd" can relate to.

1. Hearing "Can I copy your homework?" almost every day.

I swear I was everyone's walking answer key.

2. "Exhausted" becomes a personality trait.

There just isn't enough hours in the day to study as much as we do AND sleep.

3. You have to resist the urge to answer every question in class.

Eventually, the teacher just stops calling on you and that's when you know you've gone too far.

4. "Failing" to everyone else is an F, but failing to you is a B.

Once, I cried and begged one of my teachers for extra credit because I had an 89 his class... Whoops.

5. Your favorite high school memories were most likely made during after school tutorials.

The library was the ultimate hangout and our teachers were our friends.

6. Extra credit isn't optional.

Once I did extra credit for a class I had a 100 in. My teacher told me it was great work but he was confused on what I wanted him to do with it because I didn't need the extra credit. I told him I did it just in case I did terribly on my next test and I knew he was hardcore judging me.

7. You are constantly referred to as a teacher's pet.

I guess that's what happens when you answer all the questions in class, spend hours in tutorials and make good grades...

8. The race for GPA points is more competitive than the presidential election.

There's nothing like secretly (and selfishly) hoping your classmate will fail their next test so you have a shot at moving up a rank.

9. You've actually been grounded from studying.

One time my mom literally threatened to take away my books. My attitude straightened up real fast.

10. You are told to relax countless times a week.

Except your life basically depends on this test and if you get less than a 95 you're a complete and total failure.

11. Saying you're going to fail every test that you clearly won't fail.

We don't normally score below a 90 on any test, but yet we are convinced we failed all every one of them before we receive our grades.

12. Always doing all the work in a group project.

Group projects are the spawns of Satan.

13. Being the student everyone hates for reminding the teacher there was homework.

Hey, I didn't waste the precious time I could've been using for sleep to do an assignment that won't get a grade.

14. The way nerds are perceived is totally unfair.

We really don't dress like Urkel.

15. Deciding on a college is a struggle because we have too many options.

It's a blessing to be accepted into all of our dream schools, but when it comes to making a decision, it's a curse.

16. Spending hundreds of dollars on the SAT because even an above average score isn't good enough.

A 1500 may be average but anything under an 1800 is unacceptable in nerd world.

17. Realizing that the best study sessions happen at 3 am.

There's no better time to study for a test that is two weeks away than when everyone else is enjoying their REM sleep.

18. Being told to stop talking about school multiple times during the summer and on weekends.

One time I was explain potential gravitational energy and kinetic energy to my mom when we were at a roller coaster park on some July day. My sister yelled at me because "I was ruining summer."

19. Envying everyone who doesn't care about their grades.

They're so much less stressed than we are and it must be nice to sleep when it's nighttime.

20. Still appreciating your brains and obsession with school despite the minor annoyances.

Sure, we get less sleep and our stress levels are ten times higher than they should be and we carry a somewhat negative connotation. On the bright side though, intelligence is kind of like a superpower that nobody can take away from you, and it's blessing to truly enjoy strengthening that power.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
