Homesickness is bound to happen at some point when you're in a foreign country, faraway from familiarity and the regular flux of your normal life. There are some moments that especially inspire a deep ache for America and home.
For example:
1. When locals stare at you every time you walk by because you're so blatantly "American."
2. When you finally find a supermarket and they only sell one kind of peanut butter.
3. When you get food poisoning.
4. When you have to make new international friends.
5. When your lunch consists of -- once again -- bread, rice and/or beans.
6. When you have to buy the bag you put your groceries in.
7. When you trip and fall on the "quaint" cobbly ground.
8. When you get back from a night out.
9. When the street cleaning machines wake you up in the middle of the night.
10. When you walk by/sit next to nearly any human being.
11. When you're asked if you want to give money on the street.
12. When you have to do school in Spanish.
13. When you go to McDonald's.
14. When you have yet to encounter a cute Spanish boy.
15. When the hot water shuts off mid-shower.
16. When you pass yet another couple aggressively making out in public.
17. When a local completely disregards your attempt at Spanish and speaks English to you.
While I'm loving my time abroad and all the fun new experiences it provides, I'm definitely missing the good old U.S. of A!
