Dachshunds are typically known as "weiner dogs." They're smaller canines with long bodies, often described as being one half dog tall and and two dogs long. In my 22 years, I have grown attached to seven different dachshunds. While these dogs were all different sizes and colors, I've noticed many similar behaviors. These lovable dogs are truly one of a kind. Here are 16 things that dachshund owners know to be true.
1. They are bed hogs.
For a little dog, dachshunds take up a lot of space. If you let your dachshund sleep with you, which you basically have to do because they're so cute and warm, you'll soon see that your big bed becomes a lot smaller. They take bed time seriously, spreading out to get as comfy as possible, leaving you curling up in a ball with the foot of leftover space.
2. They are serious beggars.
Dachshunds love food, especially our food. No matter how many times you say "No!", they are always putting their noses right back in your face, determined to get a little piece.
3. Queen Victoria's quote is true. "Nothing will turn a man's house into a castle more quickly and effectively than a dachshund."
4. They are masters of the side eye.
Dachshunds are sassy. They love their owners, but they aren't afraid to show us they think we're strange.
5. They love to snuggle.
With their long bodies, they are great at curling up in balls and fitting on our laps. They are our own personal little heaters. Of course, they have to be in the mood to snuggle, but they usually are.
6. They're always at your feet.
I always feel bad when I trip on my doxie, but it's hard not to as she is always right under my nose! They follow us around wherever we go, making it that we have to be careful where we step.
15. They like to be boss dog.
Doxies are always in charge. You may pay for the house and the bills, but they're the ones who run the show.
8. They're called "badger dogs" for a reason.
Dachshunds are hound dogs. They love to hunt anything. They pounce, guard, and are always looking for the next great hunt. Their noses are perfect for small holes, and they are the masters of digging. As they used to be bred to hunt badgers, you can bet they have a vicious side.
9. They are loyal.
Dachshunds love their people.
10. They wiggle.
An excited dachshund is a happy wiggle machine. They dance from excitement.
11. Belly rubs are their favorite.
12. They have a sweet side.
Despite the occasional vicious hunter side, dachshunds can really show how much they love us. From snuggling to giving kisses, they prove that they are great dogs. They're protective because they love us. We're their people.
13. They're really smart dogs.
My dog can always figure out how to open the garbage or what words like "walk," "treat," and "grandma's house" mean. They catch on quick and truly are smart. They're just stubborn and usually only listen when they feel like it.
14. There is always mischief to be had.
15. It's hard to stay mad at them.
Dachshunds are so cute, it's hard to hold a grudge. They usually show their best puppy eyes and an "I'm sorry" face, and you forget why you were mad in the first place.
16. They're addictive.
I always want another! I love dachshunds, and I can't imagine not having one.
To dachshund owners, these dogs are more than "hot dog dogs" or "weiner dogs," they are true friends that leave paw prints on the heart.
