15 Ways Your Big Is Actually Like Your Mom

If you’re in a sorority, you’ve been lucky enough to experience a multitude of the extraordinary privileges of Greek life, from meeting and making a hundred of your new best friends, to sisterhood yoga and shopping and lib dates, to exchanges with frats. However, one of the best parts of Greek life, for me at least, has been getting to know and falling in love with my Big sister.

Going into Big and Little week and Greek life in general, I wasn’t exactly enchanted by the notion of having a Big; I already had the best biological big sister in the world, as far as I was concerned. However, from the minute I met my now Big, becoming her little and best friend has been one of the highlights of my college experience thus far. And, as it turns out, while she is like a big sister (and best friend and boyfriend) to me, although she didn't technically "birth" me, more than anything she has become like my second mom. Hopefully, those of you who are lucky enough to be the child of an amazing Big like me can relate:

  1. She lets you stay at her place all the time. Seriously, you basically live there.
  2. She shops for you even when you’re not with her (and loves to get you guys matching outfits).
  3. She feeds you. Constantly.
  4. She makes you run errands with her, and is willing to drive you anywhere you need to be at any given time.
  5. She’s always there to give you advice, but supports you and your decisions even when she doesn’t agree with them.
  6. She doesn’t judge you for your mistakes and has an uncanny ability to turn them into valuable life lessons.
  7. She loves dressing you up (usually in all of her clothes).
  8. She weighs in on your choice in boys, and no one gets to date you without her approval.
  9. She tries to help you with your homework, even when she's never even heard of the subject.
  10. She's proud of every accomplishment you make, no matter how big or small (she's equally thrilled when you get an A on your midterm and when you make it to your 8 a.m. on time).
  11. She’s incredibly protective, especially when someone hurts you.
  12. She lets you cuddle and cry with her when you’re sad (or when you’re happy and just really want to cuddle).
  13. You can watch all of your favorite TV shows together, because you have all of the same favorite TV shows (cough, cough "Grey’s Anatomy").
  14. She’s always honest with you, even when it sucks to hear.
  15. She will always be there for you and love you, no matter what.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.
