Excuse my vulgarity here, but I've got to use the proper term, "shitposting." Whether through text posts on Tumblr, greentexts on 4chan or Reddit or obscure videos on YouTube, has essentially become the contemporary form of Dadaism, tentatively dubbed Neo-Dadaism.
Everyone knows the Twitter account belonging to "wint" (@dril), and some would be familiar with blogger the-pietriarchy on Tumblr. However, that doesn't exactly cover the audio-visual part of shitposting; one would need to delve into the deeper breaches of YouTube to find the ironic videos hitting upon the profound meme themes, the tiny gems among seas of unsorted videos. Thankfully, my playlist and endless hours on the Internet have unearthed quite a few of them.
1. yodeling goldfish.avi
Yes, I know it's uncapitalized: so is the actual title of the video. We must remain true to art forms, must we not?
Some people who are conditioned to what one might call "normal" senses of humor may find this video absolutely senseless. Me? I honestly spent a good thirty seconds laughing my ass off at this. Multiple times. Who knows? Shitposting, man. It's surreal.
2. Rita Work Out Video
I wish my middle and high school teachers used these moves for the dance unit in gym instead of the other crap they taught us, like ballroom or line dances. Honestly, these moves are pretty fun.
3. Jimmy Neutron Happy Family Happy Hour
I can't begin to praise this one enough. This video captures almost everything a video shitpost should be: intentionally crappy animation and voice acting, an absurd and/or dark story that doesn't make any sense, and shitty one-liners that you end up quoting in unrelated situations just for the meme-related irony of it all. Some of the commenters were disgruntled by the video itself. Me and many others? We had a hell of a time laughing at the entire thing.
4. Potion Seller
Potion Seller is one of the classics that grew into fame around August 2014, to my knowledge. It's probably one of the better known videos of this list thus far. This transaction between a battle-ready knight and a stubborn merchant with the best potions may be dull and insensible to some and tearfully hilarious to others (like me, again).
5. Super Mario Dance Bros
This one's quite amazing as well, though its hilarity value may be less than that of Jimmy Neutron Happy Family Happy Hour's. The crappy clay-like animation of awful dance moves? The horrid lip-synchronization? The absolutely cringe-worthy early 2000s song from some super teenage rock band? This is a work of ironic art.
6. You On Kazoo!
This video genuinely confounds me. Was the original poster someone who had the entire context and cut and edited the prime parts in the weirdest sequence? Why is the audio so crappy? What is with some of the incredibly inaccurate voices these children have? I don't understand this video, yet I watch it constantly. Something about it draws me to its story. Its special bond with the watcher. What is up with "pretending?" I don't know, but I'm trapped in this video anyway.
7. Garfielf
OK, listen. I can't begin to explain my love for this video. It may even be better than Jimmy Neutron Happy Family Happy Hour. The voiced-out typos in the script with computer-generated speakers, the disgruntling art style, the narrative and the voice effects. Man, the voice effects.
8. ???
There's something beautiful about this story here. Something truly profound and poignant. The face-switch proves to us about the anonymous male protagonist a moral lesson. The uploader left in the descrpition "The powers of our Lord are far beyond our recognition." I agree.
9. The Real Hamilton/Burr Duel
Do you remember the historical duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr? This wonderfully animated and voice-acted video shows the actual event that happened as the two men were settling the date and condition of their death match. Bless you, Xtra Normal.
10. Hi, welcome to chili's
Originally, the pale white boy welcoming you to Chili's came from this seven-second video. However, someone else took that lovely statement and helped craft and polish it into another beauteous work of art. Thank you, Internet.
11. HEREINMYGARAGE.mwv
Know Tai Lopez, the dude who gives a bunch of inspirational commercials and had a TEDX talk or something? Someone on YouTube edited his lamborghini video into something painfully hilarious. Honestly, this is one of my favorite videos of this list.
12. GI Joe - Pork Chop Sandwiches
Originally, this was a parody video of PSA announcements by a private company. However, when this was made, it was made with, to me, what were full intentions of adhering to shitposting standards, even though it came before shitposting time. The storyline and voice-acting? Fantastic. Addicting. Gorgeous.
13. jimmy neutron x danny phantom otp amv
Ironic ships, or couples, are also definitely shitposting topics. This one's a great example of what many of these animed music videos (AMVs) tend to be like - although some can be much more intricate, complex, and well-done, all for the sake of irony –– like the one below.
14. ||MEP||-Slipped Away[Sherlock/Sasuke]
This one's a little different from the rest. It wasn't exactly made for shitposting intent... but the content is a bit over-the-top ridiculous. Actually, it's so ridiculous everyone takes it in a shitposting manner, even if the video was originally created with genuine intentions. Have you seen the video? Do you take it with earnest seriousness? Honestly, this video's ironic value is great. (An "MEP" stands for a "Multi-Editor Project," by the way.)
15. i love bread
I have the vague idea this was originally part of some Weight Watchers ad, but someone has edited this –– much in the same spirit of HEREINMYGARAGE.mwv –– so that the message has become far more absurd and meaningless (and yet all the more meaningful at the same time). I can honestly agree with this lady. I love bread. I love bread.
