15 Things I Wish I Knew as a Freshman

"I'm just havin' fun with it."

1) Put yourself out there

Every other freshman here is just as nervous as you are.

2) Don't go home as much

Yeah, you miss your family but you're also missing out on so much you could be doing at your new school with new people!

3) STOP PROCRASTINATING

You got away with it in high school, but it will NEVER work in college and it adds way too much unnecessary stress.

4) Go to all the cheesy school events

The first 10 minutes will definitely be awkward, but it's a great way to get to know new people and get comfortable with your school.

5) Go to all the athletic events

If you don't know anyone at least you know that you're all here for one reason: to support your classmates!

6) GO TO THE LIBRARY

You will get so much more home work/studying done there, rather in your dorm room I PROMISE.

7) Go to bed at a decent time

Just because you're free of curfews and parental judgement of your bed time does not mean that you need to watch Netflix until 1:00 AM when you have an 8:00 AM class.

8) NO HOARDING

Trust me, you don't need every article of clothing in your closet at home, piece of jewelry you haven't worn in the last six months, or those shoes that you loved in high school but literally have no cushion in heel anymore.

9) Call your parents

Believe it or not they most likely miss you more than they let on, CALL THEM, they love you.

10) Try new things

New foods, music, places, just try something different!

11) Join a club

It sounds cliche and geeky but you'll be thankful you did, it's good for resumes and its good to feel like you belong to something.

12) Don't be overwhelmed by being alone

Independence is important, take the time to figure yourself out!

13) Always be the one who smiles

Say hi to people you pass going to classes or in the dining halls, they'll remember it.

14) Don't be afraid to stay in, or go out

It's okay to cuddle up to your favorite book on a Saturday night, but it's also okay to party with all your friends and not regret a single thing.

15) HAVE FUN WITH IT

It's not always going to be perfect, but be that goofy, up for anything, life-loving person. Life is too short and this is the start of a crazy adventure that will shape you into the beautiful human you're meant to be.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
