Moms are superheroes, there’s no doubt about it. They seem to always have everything under control and take care of everyone - often going unappreciated. Here’s a list of things we may forget to thank our moms for, but really should.
1. Being our biggest fans
Moms always think you’re the best, no matter how average you truly are. They are there for any sporting event, school dance, or even just helping you get out of bed in the morning. No matter what the obstacle is, mom will be there with a sign, a loud cheering voice, and a snack.
2. Taking pictures
Where is mom in all of your childhood pictures? Behind the camera, making sure everything gets documented of course! She may have missed out on being in many pictures, but without her you’d never know what you look like swimming naked in a blowup pool in your backyard. Shoutout to moms for helping us all have the ability to post really cute #tbt's.
3. Being a healthy role model
Growing up I always remember my mom eating healthy and working out, and she helped me live that way when I was young. Without her teaching me good habits, I don’t know if I’d be the healthy adult I am today, and I appreciate her being a good role model so much.
4. Doing laundry
God, laundry sucks. No matter how long you’ve been doing it, there was a point where you weren’t able to, and chances are your mom picked up the slack. I can’t imagine how terrible it was to wash countless bibs spilled on with baby food, or to try and get the grass stains out of nice clothes we shouldn’t have been playing in the grass with. Thanks, mom, for learning all the laundry tricks and then passing them down to us.
5. Always wanting to spend time together
My mom and I both love music, so our favorite thing to do is see live music together. I can’t thank my mom enough for teaching me to love concerts as much as she does. No matter what your mom and you have in common, she always wants to do it with you, and that's pretty great. (I mean, how cute is my mom at Pridefest? Also, how chill is she for taking me to Pridefest?)
6. Spoiling you
When you guys hang out, she probably spoils you quite a bit. Moms are always down to buy ice cream, brunch, or whatever you want...and probably buys you too many back to school clothes, too. Moms are the only reason we still look good when we're broke.
7. Giving the best advice
Moms always know the perfect thing to say to solve your problems and help you out of sticky situations. Whenever you’re struggling in life, mom is the first person you’ll call. She'll know what to do, and has probably made the same mistake when she was your age.
8. Teaching us how to look good
Moms teach their kids everything they need to know about dressing nice, how a suit should fit, how to do makeup correctly, and basically showing us how to look as great as they do. We'll never know how moms look so put together all of the time, but we'll do our best to copy them and get by. Below is my mom letting me start rocking crop tops from a young age, and she's been approving my outfits since.
9. They are selfless
Moms always put their kids before themselves. While they should definitely take more "me" time, and we may wish they put themselves first more, we need to applaud them for how much they sacrifice. There is nothing a mother wouldn't do for her child, and it's an unconditional love you won't find anywhere else.
10. The insane amount of driving they do
Before kids turn 16, they need to be carted around everywhere, and moms do it with minimal complaints. They take one kid to soccer practice, drop the next at dance, and then swing over to the grocery store. The second they’re done shopping, it’s off to pick up the next kid from their activity. Honestly, how do they do this without going insane?
11. Not ever judging us
Let’s be real, there were some middle school trends she probably didn’t appreciate. But she stood by you through all of them, letting you wear whatever you wanted and regret it later. Yes, you looked rough. And yes, she told you so. When I was little my mom and I had countless fights about needing to brush my hair, and let's just say she may have been right about that one.
12. Knowing how to cheer us up when we’re upset
Moms are the best people to eat ice cream and cry with, or to watch a movie and cuddle. No matter what the problem is, mom will solve it. By the time she's through, you'll forget whatever was bothering you. Who can be sad when you have the best mom in the world by your side?
13. Letting you borrow things even though you ruin them
Can you use her car that you’ve broken the mirror off a week ago? Apparently, yes. The dress she’s only worn once and knows you’re going to stain? Yes again. Moms seem to have no limit to their selflessness and patience while you're still learning and growing.
14. Dealing with your moodiness
Moms are there for us when we’re sad, angry, or just being mean because we’re tired, and after all of it they forgive you. Moms deserve a standing ovation for not kicking us out of the house daily or hanging up the phone on us two minutes into every conversation. Here is my younger brother and I, after he broke his collarbone and I got ankle surgery. My mom took care of us on the couch, as we were being the crabbiest people alive for about two weeks straight without any complaints.
15. Carrying us around for nine months
She literally held you in herself for ¾ of a year - when is the last time you thanked her for that? Being pregnant sounds terrible and I don’t think there are enough "thank yous" in the world to make this one even.
There is no way to be the best mom ever, and they all mess up sometimes. But if any of these numbers reminded you of something your mom has done for you, go thank her. After all, she did the best she could - and the best she could turned out to be pretty great.
