My little sister is a senior in high school this year. I still can’t believe she’ll be graduating in June! When did we grow up? I’m sure my parents are asking themselves the same thing. I’ve always tried to be a role model for her. I’m sure there were times when I wasn’t her favorite person in the world and there were definitely times when she wasn’t my favorite person either. We’re still sisters, though. She’ll always love me and I’ll always love her. One day she’ll be my maid of honor, the godmother of my children and she will always be my best friend
Since it’s her senior year and she is about to start the next chapter of her life in college, I wanted to tell her the 15 things I want her to know.
1. Go to your senior prom.
It may seem like something very simple and kind of dumb, but trust me, you should go. It’s a lot of fun and it’s one of the last times you will be in a room full of people you have been going to school with your whole life.
2. Boys are stupid.
Boys will make you cry. It’s an unfortunate fact, but it happens. I want you to know that I will always be there for you. I’ll always be a phone call away. If you want to cry on the phone to me, that’s fine. I might not be able to understand you, but I’ll let you cry it out and I will be there to tell you that boys are in fact stupid.
3. Friends will come and go.
This is another unfortunate thing. It’s hard letting go of a friend. You will want to blame yourself and you might want to be angry at your friend, but try not to. Being angry won’t help and you shouldn’t blame yourself. Unfortunately, some friendships come to an end.
4. Read a good book every now and then.
I know you hate to read, but you really should read every once and a while, it’s good for you. I have plenty of book recommendations if you want one.
5. Spend money on the things you love.
I’m sure mom won’t be happy that I’m telling you this, but it’s OK to spend the money you make on something you love every once and a while. Get your nails done, get yourself a coffee, buy those jeans you really want, just treat yourself if you want. Don’t blow all of your money, but it’s OK to spend your money. Life is too short not to have the jeans you want.
6. Let mom take your picture.
I know you hate having your picture taken and honestly, how many pictures does mom have of us in front of that tree in our front yard? It makes her happy, though, and before you know it, you will be off at college and she won’t be able to take a picture of you on your first day of school. So put a smile on and do it for mom and dad.
7. Go to the college you want to go to.
Don’t let anyone else tell you where to go. You are the one that has to go to this school for four years so you have to be the one who likes it.
8. Enjoy time with family.
You never know when will be the last time you will see someone. Appreciate family and be grateful for every moment you have with family.
9. Hold on to the little things.
I have a ton of movie tickets, concert tickets and other little reminders of the good times I’ve had. Hold on to these things.
10. Don't ever tell mom and dad you hate them.
This is very important! You might think you mean it, but you don’t. Trust me, you will regret it. They do so much for us. So much more than you know. The least we could do for them is always tell them we love the and never tell them we hate them.
11. Don't let people pressure you into anything.
Seriously, though, it won’t make you cool. Hold on to your values and only do what you are comfortable doing.
12. Get enough sleep.
Sleep is important. Especially when you get to college, sleep is the most valuable thing.
13. Eat what you want.
Of course, you should be healthy, but don’t sweat the small things. Having a cupcake every once and a while is fine. If you want to have ice cream for dinner, go for it. If you want to lay on the sofa, eat candy, and watch Netflix, don’t forget to invite me first.
14. You. Are. Beautiful.
I don’t care what you say, you are gorgeous and don’t you forget it! You can always count on me to be there to tell you that you look beautiful.
15. You're the best little sister.
I know, that’s super cheesy, but you are! We may fight sometimes and we may be opposites when it comes to certain things, but there is nobody else I would want as a little sister.
I hope you remember these 15 things. I will always remember the amazing times we have had together and I am so excited for the memories we are bound to make. All the times we reenacted the "Lion King" with our cat she probably hate us). All the times we screamed the lyrics to songs in the car. I also still love you even though you have a horrendous taste in music. You are my favorite person and I will love you forever.
